    I'm on a Boat

Post by Link64 on Fri Sep 02, 2011 6:07 pm

    Date: Sept. 2
    Time: 3:30

The sound of the waves crashing on shore was a sound that, until recently (well, it was actually almost a year ago) Link had never heard. In his day and age, Hyrule was landlocked nation, surrounded by forests and mountain ranges. He'd only seen the ocean for the first time when he'd entered Termina and visited Great Bay. He'd never imagined that a body of water could be so big, the ocean made the vast Lake Hylia seem like a puddle. The ocean breeze smelled very different from inland air, and it seemed like the winds by the sea never stopped blowing. It was a beautiful sight, but it was not what he was used to.

How different his Hyrule was from the Great Sea on which the other boy named Link had lived, sailing across the waters as the kingdom Link had once explored slept beneath the waves. Link slowed Epona as they reached the dock house, hopping off her back and looking out at the shimmering sea. In Great Bay, when he'd been there, the ocean had been disturbed by the evil magic that Skull Kid had been using, preventing anyone from venturing too far off the coast, so even as big as it had looked, Link had not traveled far into it.

But here the ocean was fine, and they were going to go fishing! The boy climbed the steps up onto the dock and walked to the window where a man sat, a rack of fishing rods on the wall behind him. Link was so short though, that his head barely made it over the counter.

The man looked up only when Tatl let out an impatient ding, and then looked down at Link. "You the 3:30 rental?" Link nodded, and the man stood up and started getting the fishing equipment out, and setting things on the counter. "Find one of those that fits you and put it on." The man said, gesturing towards a box of weird, padded vests. Link picked a few out, looking for a small enough size to fit him, finally finding one. He had to take his sword and shield off to get it on, though, and even then he couldn't figure out how the straps worked. Finally he got them on and put his sword strap over the vest, grimacing at how uncomfortable it was.

"What's the point in that? You can hardly move!" Tatl said, giving the vest a disapproving look.

He tried to shrug but it wasn't easy with the extra padding. "Maybe Link will know." The boy said, referring to the other Link, who knew how to sail. He, on the other hand, had been on a boat only once, in Great Bay, and it had been self-steering.

If Link's face could merge and become one with the taxi window, it would have because that was how close his nose was pressed against the glass. The taxi driver chuckled at the boy's reaction upon seeing the ocean and also cast nervous glances back at his passenger for that closeness to the window will surely leave a mark.

Thank god they arrived at the docks because the taxi driver was really starting to worry the kid's face will forever stay glued to his window if he stayed plastered on it any longer. Link on the other hand, couldn't contain his excitement. He paid the fare and happily gave a very large tip as well - that was how happy he was to see the ocean.

He grabbed his fishing rod, climbed out of the taxi and sucked in a breath. Then..."Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" he shouted at the sea as he ran and like a green blur, shot down the docks, throwing his fishing supplies to one side at the end of it and dove right into the waters beside the boats.

"Bwah!" he gasped as he surfaced, grinning like a fool as he splashed the water several times. If he could hug the water, you bet he would be doing it right now.

He spotted the other Link and waved cheerily, giving the man beside him a sheepish wave before climbing back onto the dock, soaking wet. He chuckled at the life vest Link had on as he wrung out his hat and whatever he could of his clothes while still remaining clothed.

"Don't laugh, you're wearing one too," the man said, setting down the rental fishing supplies. Link frowned but obediently picked one out and put it on anyway, grinning at the rebellious thought of taking it off the moment they were out of the man's sight.

In a puffy vest now and still dripping wet, he pulled out his digi-glass (thank the Triforce it's waterproof) and wrote to the old man. "Sorry, I'm late. Which one is our boat, sir?"

Then he added another note at the bottom for the other Link. "Ready for a day of fishing?"

The tapping of boots announced the arrival of the other Link, and Link looked up in time to see him dash pasted and jump off the end of the dock with a splash, creating a ripple that rocked the nearest boats. He grinned. He was the younger of the two, but he felt like he was the older one. Time travel did that.

Link returned the wave, and, wishing he didn't have to wear the ridiculous vest, walked over to the man. While the other Link was putting his vest on, the rental man shoved the fishing gear into Link's arms, then lead the boys to the boat. He stopped and eyed them for minute, probably trying to decide if he should ask why two young boys in matching green clothing wanted to rent a boat all day on the ocean, but he seemed to decide not to question it, and stepped aside to let them get on the boat.

It rocked as Link hoped in, but unlike land, and he quickly steadied himself and set the fishing gear down.

"It said you have experience... so I won't bore you with the details of how to sail. Bring her back by dusk." He said, backing up to undo the mooring line. "She has an emergency radio, if you have troubles call and we'll send someone out for you. Stay within sight of the coast. Don't catch any sharks. And don't-" He looked at the older Link. "Don't take that vest off, no drowning while renting one of my boats."

Link very much doubted that either of them would drown, he had the Zora mask and the other Link had grown up by the ocean and was probably a great swimmer, although that finally explained the point of the vests, they prevented drowning. Somehow.

The man untied the mooring with both boys on the boat, and they were free to sail out to see.

((I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SAIL!))

He blinked up at the man when he directed the vest comment towards him. How did he...er, just blinked blankly and pretend to be innocent, Link. Yes, that should convince him.

The boy inspected the boat for a few mins before quickly getting to work, waving at the rental man as he pushed the boat away from the dock with his foot, shoving as hard as he could. It wouldn't do to start sailing right away, they need a bit more space first. He steered the boat as they drifted further then he judged there was enough room for errors, he hoisted the sail and off they went~

Within minutes they were away from the docks and covering distance steadily and Link just couldn't contain the thrill of sailing again. The spray of the water, the seagulls, the open expanse of the ocean, the breeze and the way the boy swayed under his feet. He whipped off his life vest and let it drop to his feet. This felt great! He did keep an eye on the other Link though since he wasn't sure if the boy sailed before and seasickness was a common element of it.

Once they reached a seemingly good spot in of water to start testing the depths below for fish, he slowed down and stowed the sail away, letting the boat cruise and bob gently on the ocean waves. He reached down for the fishing gear, handing the other Link his fishing rod nad about to reach for the box of bait when there was a distinctive 'tunk' noise and the boat turned around - not sharply but veering strangely enough to make one look up and bubble a question mark.

The boat arched across the waters and the sky darkened. Link blinked a few times up at the clouds before peeking over the edge to spot the telltale signs of a whirlpool. When did they... he didn't sail them into a whirlpool! He hadn't been sailign for a while, yes, but he wasn't as rusty as to stop them right in the middle of a....

"AAAH!" Link cried out in realisation and as if to confirm his fears, a purple tentacle emerged from the centre of the whirlpool.

((Sorry for moving onto the Octo so fast? I thought you may want this over before your get piled down with homework.))

Link grinned as they set off, the boat picking up speed. He was kind of watching the other Link and how he maneuvered the boat, but mostly he was watching as the dock disappear quickly behind them, and watching the trail the boat made in the surf. The breeze whipped hi hat and his hair, as he looked out at the horizon, so...flat. No mountains as far as they could see, the ocean was just so big! He still couldn't quite get over that.

"Careful, don't rock the boat! How far out are we going? This seems far enough, what if we get lost out here?!" Tatl said, clinging to Links head and shouting over the sound of the flapping sails.

After a while they reached a good spot, apparently, and the older Link stopped the boat, handing Link a fishing rod. "Thanks!" Link said, noticing the other boy had taken the vest thing off, and was going to ask about it, when the boat suddenly started to move on it's own.

This didn't seem like it should be happening. The water below them was churning, starting to rotate and pulling the boat along with it. And the something purple raised out of the water, something that looked like an octorok tentacle only huge... and it was followed by the biggest octorok Link had ever seen.

He took a step back from the edge and felt the boat rock under him. There was no way he'd be able to aim from this unstable surface. He'd have to practice that someday, but not right now. He fumbled for a seconds with the vest, finally dropping it on the boat floor and pulling out the Zora Mask.

Using these masks wasn't exactly the most pleasant experience, but it was definitely better than being eaten by a giant octorok. He shoved the mask onto his face, and felt it immediately tighten against his skin, blocking his mouth and nose, making him feel like he was going to suffocate. He let out a muffle yell as the mask became his face. He skin was stinging like a thousand needles were poking him as zora scales started to cover him. There was a stabbing pain on his arms from where the fins where forming, and his bones were aching as he felt them growing, making him taller. It only lasted a few seconds, and then the pain was gone completely, and he stood on the boat, now the height of an adult, in the body of a zora.

A big octo! Exactly how many enemies and monsters was imported here from the Great Sea. First the chuchus and now Octos?

Link's first reaction was to arm the cannon on the ship but his fingers smacked into the wooden rim of the boat and he was painfully reminded that this wasn't the King of Red Lions nor S.S. Linebeck. "Gah!" he cried out in frustration then froze when the other Link started yelling (even if it was muffled). He turned around, jumped in surprise and almost stumbled backwards out of the ship when the boy changed before his eyes to a Zora. At least he thought he was a Zora, since he only ever met Laruto and Zora Warriors when it came to this race.

He reached out a hand, wanting to poke the fins but paused when he realised that this was hardly the time to be curious. He straightened, nodded seriously at the other boy er...man? Adult? before taking out his digiglass, hurriedly scribbling his words on it. "The eyes are the weak spots. If you're going into the water, I'll take care of the boat."

Once he was sure his message was read, he hooked one of the mast's ropes around his own foot. Good swimmer or not, he'll be swept up by the current if he fell in the whirlpool. He pocketed the writing device and fetched out his bow and arrow. How many eyes does this beast have now? One, two, three... seven!

From the depth rose a mighty monster, native to the great sea, with massive suckers and seven glaring eyes. The Big Octo waved it's tentacles menacingly, it's eyes focused on the boat that had ventured into it's territory, looking at the two figure that would soon be it's lunch.

With a great sweep it plowed it's arm towards the boat, aiming to knock the boys over.

Link nodded. "Alright," He pulled his arms back and sent his fins flying towards the monsters eyes, like boomerangs, and then lept into the water where he would catch the fins again. He timed his leap well, because a moment later the octorok flailed it's tentacle right across where he'd been standing. He squinted through the foam to make sure that the other Link wasn't hurt before turning to face the massive leviathan.

He could feel himself being dragged by the current, and was glad that he could breathe underwater. If the other Link fell in, he'd have to be quick to help him get out, there was little chance even the best swimmer could get out of this whirlpool--he was a Zora and it wasn't easy even for him to navigate!

Tatl was circling the monster, trying to guide the other Link to any openings where he could hit it's eyes. Though she didn't know he'd never used a fairy for aiming, she felt her services would be more suited in helping him. Her Link only had to grab the monster and use his electric shield.

Had it been a less serious of a situation, link would have applaud the boomerang fins attack but sadly it was a pretty serious situation. The other Link dived into the water and the older boy gaped and leant over the rail, practically having a heart attack. How could he dive right into the whirlpool! Was he crazy?!

Yet, he seem to be coping fairly well in the water...

FWOOOSH! A purple tentacle soared over his head and the Wind Waker clutched his hat so it didn't fly away. Then Tatl flew towards the octo, giving the boy the second almost heart attack of the day. TOWARDS the octo? That's dangerous, you know!

But wait... she was surviving perfectly fine too. What was with beings from his ancestor's time period that made them so...what's the word? Adaptable? Incredible?

He lifted up his bow and notched his arrows in place, praying Tatl could avoid arrow shots as well as she does monster blows. The boat circled around and he was given a clear view of the eyes. He fired three arrows, two to the same eye and one to a different one.

The octo roared with pain as not only did it sustain enough damage to render one of its eyes useless but the area around it was injured too. The other injured eye - snort, tis only a scratch. The human in the boat was small and does not pose much of a threat if the arrow shot was anything to go by, the whirlpool made sure the little boy will have a difficult time aiming.

The other human though, the one who turned big, looked pretty tasty especially now that he was bigger. The big octo focused all its eyes on the zora before like a human smacking a fly, slammed one of its tentacles down onto the water and into the depths below. It was not shallow enough to squish the zora into the seabed but it will pack enough of a punch disorientate him and maybe caused him to be swept up by the currents.

The other tentacle jabbed at the boat, if he broke the little vessel then the boy in it will be nothing worth worrying about at all.

"Gwah!" Link shouted in surprise at seeing the tentacle jab. He reached for the sails and unfurled it just in time to catch a tiny bit of wind, thus slowing the boat enough to miss the attack. Ducking under the sail, he pulled out another set of arrows, taking aim carefully.

His previous arrows missed though it could be because he was distracted by worrying about shooting Tatl and by the younder Link in the waters. Focus, Link. Focus. It would probably be better if he used his boomerang but this was a challenge that he rather looked forward to.

He aimed for the eye he barely scratched earlier on and fire another two arrows towards it.
