Lawrence peered through the foliage along with Zurg, also surprised by the odd blue creature that happened to be whatever the Eighth had decided to lead them to. He rolled his eyes at the monarch's look, as if to say bah, the Eighth is the one with eccentric tastes...

Still, the prey was before them now, and there was nothing left to do but kill it and take home their prize. It looked rather dumb, but even Lawrence knew that this sort of creature would be very easily spooked. He had understood Zurg's gesture and moved into position as quietly as he could, hoping this flanking maneuver would work.

With patience and a bit of luck, hopefully the two of them would bag dinner right here.

Oho, as if hunting was ever this easy...

Zurg knew a fighter when he saw one and this thing? Definitely a prime time champion, right there. He waited for Lawrence to get into position, briefly flickering his eyes as a signal. Right! The monarch took a few steps back and lightly slapped his face, getting pumped for the moment. Okay, you ready? Three... Two... One! He leaped out of the brush with a fearsome cry, brandishing his x'leliiq menacingly. "Shoo, shoo! Go on, get!" ...Well, maybe not as fearsome as believed. There was a reason why Zurg had made for a terrible hunter and it wasn't because he couldn't tell which end of his weapon was the business end. Regardless of his patsy nature, the creature instantly picked up its head and panicked.

"Bweeer!" Again with that unique bray. Whatever it was took off like a light, maneuvering its strange body directly for Lawrence's hidden position. Perfect! Now, ready your weapon and prepare to skewer it! Zurg was not far behind, trying his hardest to catch up with the creature should something happen.

If paying attention wasn't so important at the moment, Lawrence might've facepalmed at Zurg's attempt to scare the creature into running. Nope, he just wasn't very good at fearsome when he wasn't the Evil Emperor, but that was all right. The attempt worked and that was what really mattered.

Again with that odd braying and off the creature went, taking off towards the butler's position at high speed. Wait for it, wait for it, waaaait for it . . . NOW!

With the lumbering beast in range, Lawrence lunged out of the bush he was hiding in, thrusting his spear out to strike in nearly the same motion. With any luck, he would strike something vital and the creature would bleed out fairly quickly.

Welp, time for Zurg to eat his left shoe. Who would have known that Lawrence managed to impale the poor bastard on his first try? Hope you weren't squeamish, because here comes a nasty twist. SQUELCH! Rich, blue blood splattered all over Lawrence, literally peppering him as if he were some abstract painting. Knowing the more eccentric art traders, one may even have purchased him for the right price. Fortunately this was a forest and not a museum, Zurg not a moment too soon to give aid. "Lawrence! Ha ha ha, Lawrence! Can you hear me!?" Oh dear, looks like his friend was buried beneath the bleeding unfortunate. "Oh oh, hang on! Let me get you out from under there..."

With a mighty shove, the monarch put his shoulder into the beast and rolled it off, freeing Lawrence from his fleshy prison. "Lawrence!" Zurg shouted again, fairly energetic. "Lawrence, you killed it! Normally I'm not a big fan of these sorts of things, but that's the circle of life. Here, grab my hand so we can start carrying this thing home!" He assisted his friend back onto his feet, giving Lawrence's back multiple congratulatory pats. "Not bad for your first hunt, right?" the monarch asked with a smile. Too bad the creature couldn't say the same, although...

Zurg glanced down at Lawrence's kill and frowned, leaving his friend's company to study this oddity. This wasn't any different than the average herbivore, but he wondered... Would it still be edible? "Hmm... It's a bit larger than I thought." Six legs...? Oh boy, leftovers for days. Certainly can't let it waste. He reached over to remove the bulk of his pack, setting aside the wooden poles and rolled up linen. "Alright, now we begin preparing it for the journey back. Lawrence, take some rope. Tie the legs and keep it neat," Zurg instructed. They'll be able to inspect this creature fully back at the house, not here. Oh no, not here... Zurg's hands made quick work, the monarch looking up from his task every so often.

"Hurry up," the man whispered, eyes roaming around. "We don't want anything taking your spoils..."

It turned out Lawrence was right earlier, the end of this WAS disgusting, and they hadn't even started on the 'slicing creature into steaks' part yet. Getting splattered with blood was bad enough, but then the thing collapsed onto him as it died. His body was sturdy enough to avoid being crushed, but he wasn't going to get out from under there with his strength alone.

Thankfully Zurg was there immediately, rolling the beast aside and helping the butler to his feet. Now, this certainly wasn't the first thing Lawrence had ever killed, but this felt different somehow. Maybe it was from how proud the monarch sounded, or from having to get so up close and personal to do the deed and succeeding in one strike. Either way, despite how messy he currently was, he felt a smile forming. "I could have done without this beast's parting gift, but yes, it wasn't bad at all."

At being handed the rope, Lawrence quickly got to work, tying the legs together as neatly as he could. Now that they had their prize, they needed to get out of the forest and quickly . . . he would rather not have to defend their kill from anything bigger.

Lawrence looked like a big dork smiling~! "Could always be worse," Zurg snortled, clearly finding something worthwhile. "It could have leaped over you and left behind a stream of fecal matter and urine as a last minute defense mechanism. I bet Kev would know all about that, hmm?" While also being incredibly delicious, too! Ah, but enough ribbing the poor man. Soon the two hunters had bagged their kill, Zurg doing the final touches by sturdily wrapping it within linens. "I'm not sure how this thing will taste, but at least we can fashion something useful out of it." Other than the blue splotches and slight smell, they were ready to go back home. Except...

    ...crack!

An unexpected noise came from behind, Zurg spinning around with x'leliiq raised. It was already too late; the monarch found himself locking eyes with something far more hungry.

    "Hrrrrrgh..."

    Spoiler:

"No. Sudden. Moves." Without any weaponry or armour capable of blasting this animal away, it was a fool's gambit to challenge it head-on. Zurg remained deathly still, transfixed. It would seem, as fate will have it, that they encounter the previous monster in the mists before departing... "Lawrence, get ready to pick up our kill," the monarch hushed, voice as soft as a summer wind. "When I say run, you run. Don't be a fool." He was born this way, his body no stranger. Lawrence, however? Barely even a few days old.

Suddenly, without warning, the predator stood upon its hind legs and roared! "HARRRRGH!"

    "NOW!"

Zurg lashed out with his x'leliiq and immediately had the thing's fury, leaving a narrow window of opportunity. "Now, Lawrence, now! We'll meet back elsewhere!" Just take the kill and RUN!

For a moment, it seemed they wouldn't be troubled at all in getting their kill back to the house, with no opportunistic predators trying to steal it.

Funny how quickly things can change . . .

There was a cracking of a branch somewhere nearby, and suddenly the monstrous beast from earlier made its appearance known! A huge bear stared the monarch and the butler down, likely hoping for a free lunch, and probably two purple aliens for dinner.

Lawrence already knew not to move, though Zurg's whispered words made sure he didn't. The next thing said, he wanted to protest, wanted to stay there and help fight, but he knew it was no use. Not with how he reacted earlier . . . the body he wore was too new, he reacted with fear because of how out of sorts he still felt.

No, the only choice he had was to run, and when Zurg shouted, the ex-robot grabbed the kill and sprinted away as fast as he could.

Well! Looks like Lawrence was more acclimated to his body than thought, eh? Zurg had never seen the butler book it so fast in his life. Gone was Lawrence, taking off without a moment to lose. How could he? That bear was much larger than either of the men, and it was certainly hungrier to boot. With the kill on his back and adrenaline racing through his veins, Lawrence had left the frightening scene far behind. He passed bushes and branches, logs and roots, and mossy rocks and small puddles of water until... He could no longer recognize one path from another. The roars and shouts could no longer be heard, simply echoes in the back of Lawrence's mind. Zurg was nowhere to be found and the fog was still thick...

    Spoiler:

    Lawrence was alone - lost...

Post by Lawrence on Sun Jul 28, 2013 11:06 pm

Trees, bushes, stumps and rocks all went by in a blur, Lawrence too focused on getting distance to really think about which way he was going. Panic fluttered around in the back of his mind, but he managed to keep it under control enough that he didn't end up running into anything, at least.

Run, run, and run some more, and the new alien didn't even think about slowing down until the silence caught him by surprise. The ambient forest sounds were still there, birds calling to each other, vermin skittering around, and the still-present drizzle, but he could no longer hear the roars and shouts far behind him. Lawrence slowed his pace once that registered, eventually coming to a stop when he realized he didn't recognize anything about this stretch of forest.

He glanced around and nothing was familiar, so he stood there and weighed his options. Alone, lost in the woods with none of his typical ways of finding direction, and the fog still surrounded the area, obscuring most everything at a certain distance. To top it all off he was still lugging around the kill, which would probably attract all the predators in the surrounding half mile. In any other case it would be safer to stay put and let Zurg find him, but with that last detail, staying still would mean he might end up as something's dinner.

Lawrence took one more look around, perhaps waiting for Zurg to randomly pop out of the bushes, but when that didn't happen he started to move again. Of the two paths he could see, he chose the right.

As he walked, it slowly began to dawn on him just how lost he was . . . he had none of his sensors, there was no way to bounce a signal off a satellite and get his position, and he didn't even have the Chronoscepter and Quantum Actuator so he could find Zurg that way. He couldn't even see the sun, between the treetops and the clouds.

Again, panic started to build within Lawrence, the urge to just drop everything and find somewhere to hide until Zurg found him pressing on his mind. But no, he was stronger than that, wasn't he? All the things he survived, energy vampires, giant monsters and even the accursed godlike being that built this place, and he was going to let himself be frightened by a stupid bear?

No, he had to run for survival earlier, but he was not going to hide. The butler steeled his resolve and kept walking, confident he could find some way out of this mess.

So you chose the right path... It lead you to a misty thicket.

    Spoiler:

Again, your journey was silent - lonesome. All around you heard the forest's ambiance, a wide variety of bird calls and animal cries banishing the silence from an otherwise active mind. There was still no sign of your guide, Zurg; there hasn't been for over ten minutes. Truly you were lost and you had no robotic cheats to lead you out of this chilly place. The kill slung over your back was growing heavy, a light trail of azure blood dripping behind your wake. If you weren't careful... Wait, do you hear that...?

There was the sound of rushing water not too far away. A river, perhaps? It was to your west, no more than five minutes away judging from the sound. Do you think it was a wise choice to head in that directi -

Lawrence adjusted his cargo's position on his back again, not really managing to make things easier once he had. This thing was heavy, and seemed like it was getting heavier. It was also unfortunately leaving a blood trail, which was yet another thing that might end up drawing a predator to him. The only good thing about that was it also indicated where he had already been . . . he hadn't crossed his own trail yet but that was still a possibility.

As the newbie alien kept walking, somewhere between all the bird calls and croaking frogs, he started to hear the trickle of running water somewhere nearby. Was that a river? It was close, not five minutes walking distance away. It would probably help with hiding the blood still dripping from the kill, and a river would have to lead somewhere, preferably out of the forest.

Lawrence started to head in the direction of the sound, when suddenly, there was a rustle from a nearby bush. He froze in place and got his spear ready, waiting for whatever might decide to pop out of the bush.

You lucky dog, you. Diceor, you're incorrigible!

Since luck was on the newbie alien's side, there wasn't much he had to fear. Indeed, a small squirrel came running out from the bush, tail as fluffy as a cloud. Related to Xiao Xiao, perhaps? It paused upon spotting Lawrence, tail twitching, before it decided to scurry away and out from sight. Things could have been much worse, you know. Be thankful it was just a rodent and not, say, a skunk. In any event, it was best to move on. The river would not be going anywhere and it was logical to think that it may lead out of this abysmal forest. Onward, march!

    Spoiler:

The river was no more special than the average; flowing water, polished stones, and a pleasing babbling to drown out the world. This may have been a relaxing scene if circumstances had been different. As it stood, Lawrence had a bleeding carcass on his back and no way to return home.

What will he do now? The churning river almost seemed to demand an answer.
