    Return to Earth

It was a perfect late spring afternoon out in the wilds, one with partly cloudy skies, a gentle breeze, and an effectively perfect temperature… it was a great day to be out and about, and that was just what a certain duo from the Southern Water Tribe were doing.

This day found Korra and Sokka setting out for a short visit to the Boolean Mountains, one to both enjoy the beautiful day as well as to train. They weren't headed as deep into the mountains as they did at the end of last summer, nor did they plan on visiting any caves today, especially not those with strange pedestals and even stranger powers. However, they did want to visit the region again, and after some of their recent spars, they had both found themselves feeling as though even more of their true strength had returned. The general practices with each other were great, but sometimes… it was really best to get out in nature and enjoy the scenery around that, especially when there was a distinct chance that one of them was getting close to recovering a skill of hers that had been locked away.

Korra had been on the Breach for just over a year and a half now, and in that time, she had been limited to waterbending. As far as Sokka had seen, she had been incredibly skilled with it from the first day he'd met her, and even if she still had some more room to grow in that element, he had been able to see her focused skill in it grow at a very respectable rate. He didn't need to be a bender to see where she had improved, but all the same, he was glad she had gained that, and he hoped that this time, their journey to an area that was extra rocky might help her tap back into the next element in the cycle.

Once Naga had carried the two of them to a cozy notch in the lower part of the mountains, Sokka hopped off of the polar bear dog before unleashing a mighty stretch, grunting a bit in satisfaction as he raised his arms up. He did enjoy riding on Naga, but very few things could beat a good stretch after being sedentary for a while. Glancing around to Korra as she got situated herself, he stated, "All right, I think we've got a good place to spend most of the day in. Are you ready for this?"

Two Water Tribe teenagers rode their way to the mountains, carried by the Polar Bear dog. Korra could barely believe that in a few months, she would have been here for 2 years. 2 years! It was an exciting prospect, but also quite intimidating. As long as she had Sokka and Naga by her side however, she was pretty sure she'd be alright. In fact, the three of them were heading out to the mountains on something of a hunch. For the longest time, all she could do was water bend. It took a while for her to get the ability to heal back as well. She would have figured she would have earth and fire back by now, but so far, no dice. Sokka thought that maybe if she were in a place like the mountains, with so much earth and dirt, that maybe she could tap into it more.

It made a good amount of sense to her. They were usually in the city, and the city had a lot of metal. Korra had never bent any metal in her life though, so she didn't feel anything in the city buildings. Though they usually went outside of the city too, they'd only been to the mountains a handful of times, and neither very recently. This would be a lot easier if Beifong were still here, but there was no need to think about that. Especially since they were nearing a rather cozy spot on the mountains. When Naga came to a stop, Korra allowed Sokka to climb down before she swung a leg down and climbed off of the saddle. She kneelt down however, brushing her fingertips over the rocky ground. She could feel...something. She was a bit out of practice, but she could definitely feel something in the earth. "Yeah, I...think I am, actually. I think I'm ready. But I'm not sure where to start..." She glanced up at Sokka. "One of the first times I ever bent earth, I sort of...tore down a hole in the wall of my home." It made for a decently dramatic entrance though.

A part of Sokka also thought that Korra might have already regained at least the ability to earthbend by now, but up to this point, she hadn't quite seemed to have got it back just yet. Hopefully though, between their collectively recovered strength and being surrounded by more earth and rocks than they should shake a stick at, maybe today was finally her chance to reconnect with the next element in the cycle. It was a little tricky since they did not have another earthbender around to help out, but they were not about to let that be an obstacle for them. Here, they had a great spot to spend the day in, even better company, and plenty of space to work with.

As Korra climbed off of Naga, Sokka raised his eyebrows a bit as she knelt down to move her fingers across the dirt at their feet. He gave her a confident nod as she noted that she was in fact ready, despite not exactly knowing where to start. Considering that this wasn't quite like any of her previous experiences though, for either learning to bend an element or unlocking them after having dealt with Amon, he figured that made plenty of sense. Even with as confounding as it was though, he had full faith in his friend, and he knew now more than ever that she could tap back into earthbending.

Catching her glance, Sokka couldn't help but grin slightly as Korra noted what had happened one of the first times she had ever bent earth. He recalled the story from when the two of them were first still getting to know each other, around some of the stories of Aang's own adventures in starting to bend each of the four elements, but the thought of it was still endearing and amusing in its own way. That first experience might not help her here, but maybe another first experience would.

"Well, I know you had an easier time earthbending in the first place than Aang did, but maybe if you started out with something simple, that could help you get right back into it," offered Sokka. Looking about the area, he wound up finding a loose, moderate sized rock not too far from their position, and he soon pointed to it as he turned back to Korra. "When Toph first started teaching him how to earthbend, the first thing she had him do was try to move a rock… maybe that could work for you too."

Perhaps if she had really gained her earthbending back, there might be scrolls or books of some kind about earthbending in the library. It'd certainly be easier to get to then that library Aang and his friends found in the desert. Though maybe she ought not jinx them. Maybe Wan-Shi-Tong had come to the Breach and made the library his home since the last time they'd been to the library. Not likely, but certainly possible with the luck they had sometimes. Otherwise, they only had their own past experiences to draw ideas from. Not a bad thing in any way, but...definitely not the most idea way to relearn bending. It was the best thing they had though.

She picked herself back up, standing fully upright and looking to Sokka. Korra nodded in agreement, oh yes she had never had a problem with earth. Fire and water were likewise easy. Which was a little funny, her firebending master had fully expected her to struggle with fire since she was from the water tribe. She'd picked up on it easily enough, it was almost second nature. Air, however, was what had proven to be the hardest element for her to get a grasp on. As much as she wanted every element back, she dreaded how much she would likely struggle with air. It'd taken so long just for her to be able to bend it in the first place! Now it was gone again and she didn't know for sure if she would be able to pick it back up or have to start from the beginning.

"Simple, right...simple's good!" Gotta take those baby steps! Work her way up to earthbending giant walls of earth and slamming them into people. Sokka quickly pointed out a rock to her, recounting how Toph had made Aang move a rock as his first attempt at earthbending. With a firm nod, she got into position. A very stiff one, both legs spread out and firmly set. She took a deep breath, holding her arms close to her body, and focusing on that rock. It wasn't too far away, and it wasn't too big either. "Ha!" She pushed outwards with both hands, palms facing the boulder. Nothing seemed to happen for a moment. "Nyah!" She pushed again, and again, nothing. "Alright...one more time..." This time she dug her heels into the ground and focused as hard as she possibly could. She pushed out again...and this time the rock moved forward a foot. Korra stared for a moment before her face broke out into a grin and she wrapped both arms around Sokka, lifting him up. "Did you see that?! I did it, I did it!"

It had always made sense that Korra had never had much trouble with earthbending. After all, regardless of her strong personality, that element was not water's natural opposite… although it was still rather intriguing that she'd had a pretty easy time with firebending as well. No matter what though, even if she was the only bender her for the next while, Sokka was fully determined to do everything he could to help his friend regain her locked abilities. Between his previous observations for his friends around their own bending training and his own self-proclaimed skill at being a "motivational bender," he was set to help Korra every step of the way.

Smiling a little as Korra reassured herself with the notion of starting simple, Sokka nodded in agreement, noting, "That's right. Start simple, and then once you've got it, you can work your way back up to the more complex stuff. Just take it steady." Slow and steady was the way of the earth, right? At least it was at the core. Taking a couple of steps back and folding his arms as his friend took a familiar, sturdy stance, Sokka watched carefully as Korra began her attempts to earthbend for the first time in over year and a half.

Her first push did not yield any results, which whilst a little disappointing, was not too surprising. After all, it had been a while, and it might take just a little more digging to tap back into it. Korra's second attempt seemed a little stronger, but again, the rock did not budge. As she noted that she was going to try this same maneuver once more, Sokka took a slow breath and exhaled quietly, just barely whispering to himself as he did so. "Come on, Korra… you can do this…" He didn't just believe she could… he knew she could.

The third time proved to be just the one, as a heel dig, steadfast focus, and powerful push later, the rock had moved forward. Sokka blinked a couple of times before raising his eyebrows… the rock had moved. Korra had really moved it… her earthbending was really back! "HA! Way to go, Korra!" No sooner could he turn a broad grin to his friend though did he find himself caught in one of her trademark hugs, his feet soon right off the ground as she exclaimed ecstatically. He couldn't quite hug her back yet given the way she'd caught his elbows in her embrace, but he did laugh happily, especially at seeing the sheer joy in her expression. "Ha-ha, I did! You really did it! I knew you could do it!"

"Maybe if I'm lucky, by the time the world starts ending again and we join the fight to keep it from...not ending, I'll have mastered Earthbending!" Maybe even Firebending too, if she was really lucky. Heck, if she were extremely lucky, she'd have all of her bending back. However, she knew it was more likely that it'd be just the Earthbending, and possibly fire. She'd take what she could get, though! Having water, earth and fire at her fingertips would probably where she'd be most comfortable, as that had been all of the bending she could do for as long as she could remember. Airbending was still rather new to her. Some part of her also feared that without Tenzin here this time, the element might be lost to her forever. However, she was confident that she could beat that block. She'd done it once, surely she could do it again! ...But, you know, without all of the bloodbending and severing of the other elements. Definitely without that part.

The rock proved to be very stubborn, but part of being an earthbender was being more stubborn than pesky rocks. A battle of wills resulted in the boulder rolling forward just as she had meant for it to. It was just a rock, hardly some of the earthbending tricks she had pulled off before, but it was still exciting. The two friends whooped and laughed, celebrating the achievement. She chuckled at Sokka before placing him back securely on the ground, smiling at him. "Couldn't have done it without you, Sokka. And not just...because of your motivation." If Sokka had never come to the Breach, and Korra had been left to suffer the disappearance of Tenzin and Lin on her own, it was very likely that the Avatar would not even be here right now. Tenzin was father figure, a mentor. Lin had been a very good friend. If she didn't have Sokka...she probably would have disappeared as well. And likely never gotten her Earthbending, or any other bending back ever again.

The Avatar grinned brightly before bringing a hand down to ruffle and mess up the top of Sokka's head playfully. "So what next, Sifu Sokka?"

Post by Sokka on Tue Jul 22, 2014 3:04 am

"Knowing you, I think that's a very distinct possibility!" Sokka would personally go so far as to say it was a rock-solid one, but he'd rather wait to see if she really had her earthbending back before openly voicing that. He knew that having had some of her bending locked had been a sensitive subject for Korra, but whilst she'd been handling it better with each passing month since they had both arrived, he didn't want to open up any wounds he didn't have to. Still, between Korra's skill, drive, and their training sessions, he was positive that the other three styles of bending were close within her reach, and possibly closer than she herself realized.

As he was set back down on the ground, Sokka steadied his footing and glanced down to Korra, still grinning to her as he caught her smile. At what she said next though… that… that really hit him right in the heart. He'd like to have thought that his motivation and support were not the only things that had helped her, but even so… to hear that happy honesty in his friend's voice? It meant even more than he thought it might, and in response, Sokka suddenly wrapped Korra in a tight hug.

He held the embrace for a few moments before saying, "I'm just glad I was able to help… and I promise to keep helping." After all, bender or not, he could still help draw on past experience with Katara, Aang, Toph, Zuko, and even Suki to help the Avatar out. Ending the hug after another few seconds, Sokka pulled back, soon finding that Korra's hand had reached up, only to rest on his head and muss his wolftail.

"Ha-ha-ha!" Shaking his head a bit before grinning even more broadly as she addressed him as Sifu Sokka, he felt an even greater surge of pride swell in his chest. He was honored for her to call him that, and as such, he hoped his next ideas would be just right for her. Motioning at some of the softer earth behind them, Sokka stated, "You've got that rock to move, so how about we see if you can get some earth to really bend to your will? How about forming a small pillar in this area?"

Post by Korra on Wed Aug 06, 2014 4:11 pm

Her personal goal was still complete Avatar power and all four types of bending, but she'd be most comfortable with water, earth and fire. Feeling the connection to earth once more made it a real possibility instead of some dream that would never come to be. It was taking longer than she'd like, sure, but she really was getting her bending back. Little by little. Seeing the earth bend to her will, even if it was a simple command and an even simpler move, still made her heart sore and a smile stretch upon her face, one that threatened to stay there for a long time. Especially when Sokka gave her a tight hug. She hadn't been expecting it, she let out a slight huff of air from how tight the hug was, but her arms snaked around him in turn and squeezed.

"I'm here for you too, you know! Water tribe sticks together." Granted, he didn't really have any bending for her to help him with. But after all this time with him she knew there were tons of other ways that she could be there for him and help him out without any bending. The hug ended and Korra mussed up that hair, Sokka seemed to like his new title. She grinned widely, fully meaning it when she said it, before she considered what he suggested.

"Hm..." Korra turned around to face the softer patch of earth Sokka had indicated, circling around and even giving it the slightest nudge with the tip of her boot. "Yeah...yeah I think I can do that!" She imagined an invisible circle in the patch of earth. With her eyes, she outlined the circle in the dirt before she concentrated on what was below the initial crust of earth. Her legs stiffened, as did her arms, as she continued to focus on the pillar she could see that was still within the earth. Her arms became outstretched and she clenched her hands tightly, compacting the earth so that it was more solid, and with a single stomp, she raised her hands above her head. Mimicking the motion, a pillar of earth raised up out of the ground. Her arms fell to her side and she stepped forward eagerly. The pillar came to the center of their chests, and a few experimental pokes from Korra proved that it wouldn't crumble at the first gust of wind. She turned to Sokka with a smile that was slightly smug, but mostly proud.

    "How's that?"

Post by Sokka on Mon Aug 18, 2014 1:49 am

It might have just been one element returned to her, but the fact that Korra had regained earthbending was still a huge mark for his friend. Even with the practicing she'd likely have to do get back to her full potential with it, she was definitely in touch with earth again, and thus effectively had half of the elements once more. That alone was fantastic, and Sokka hoped to do all he could to help her build up on this around her return to firebending.

As Korra's happy grin lingered and Sokka found his hug returned, he soon nodded to his friend at her note that she was there for him as well. He knew she was, but it still meant a lot to him to hear it out loud. "That we do… even more than ice does to snow." It was the Water Tribe way to stick with those dear to them no matter what, and that was especially true for close friends. Whether it was in regaining his own strength and skills or just in general, Sokka knew that Korra had his back the same way he had hers, and so long as they were together, they could accomplish anything.

As Korra studied the clearing of earth he had pointed out, Sokka soon grinned as she seemed confident that she could tackle the next challenge. With a gesture for her to go right ahead, he watched as she assumed her stance, getting set to bend the earth to her will. With a couple of hand motions and well placed stomp of her foot, sure enough, a small pillar erupted out of the ground. While Korra went to go inspect it, the impressed yet unsurprised Sokka looked on from just a few steps behind her. He'd fully believed that she could make that pillar rise, and having seen her make it, it was almost as though she'd never lost touch with earthbending.

Meeting her pleased smile with a proud one of his own, he stated, "I'd say that's pretty great! Those might just be the first two steps back, but you seem like you could take care of any other earthbending you wanted to around here"

"Exactly." Korra agreed with a grin. Sticking together more than ice does to snow, a good way to put that! They especially had to stick together since they were the last members of the Southern Water Tribe. Well, the two of them and Naga of course. Naga celebrated this victory in her own way, mostly by giving each of them a slobbery lick on the cheek. Korra giggled and pushed at her muzzle gently. "Naga!" She was far too happy to really chide Naga though, running her fingers through her thick white fur as Sokka spoke. "Yeah...and practice makes perfect. I bet with some training, it'll be like I never stopped earthbending!" After a few moments, Korra stopped petting the polar bear dog and walked up to the pillar she had just made, studying it.

"Hmm..." Now that she had it here, might as well practice a few other earthbending moves on it. She stiffened her legs again, focusing. Her eyes closed and she kept her concentration on the pillar. Both of her hands were in front of her, palms facing the pillar and arms bent at the elbow. Her brows furrowed and she stomped her foot, hands turning sideways as she moved them in a diagonal slicing motion at the same time as she stomped. A diagonal slice appeared in the pillar, the top of it sliding down to the ground. Korra opened her eyes and felt the slice with an eager grin. "Ha ha! Not bad, if I say so myself!"

"Gah!!" Sokka exclaimed as Naga caught him with a big, slobbery lick right on his cheek, but as soon as he'd recovered from the initial surprise, he couldn't help but chuckle at the affectionate gesture she'd just given to the two of them. As Korra reacted to her own received lick, Sokka quickly wiped the slobber off of his face with the back of his left hand, just before he moved to give the polar bear dog a vigorous rubbing behind her ears. It looked like Naga was just as happy as they both were, and honestly, he could hardly blame her. He was thrilled for Korra, and even though it was just one part of her bending back, it was still a big step!

"Heh-heh, that it does," agreed Sokka, nodding to Korra. As far as additional training went, he had full confidence that before too long, she'd be right back where she'd been before the Breach had pulled her here. "Now that I'm sure of! You know how to do all of it and you've got the ability. Just a little more training, and I'm sure you'll rock it better than ever!"

Now that was the delivery he'd hoped to make, just before Korra took the chance to look over the pillar she'd formed. A moment later, she took another trademark stance, and executed a perfect earthbending slice. Outright grinning at seeing this, especially Korra's own reaction once she opened her eyes, Sokka noted, "Not bad at all! With moves like that, this entire area's your playground now!"

Korra chuckled at Sokka's exclamation, seems Naga caught him off-guard. She had a talent for doing that with her slobbery licks! He joined in petting Naga, and with the two of them giving her affection, Naga was definitely quite content. The polar bear dog made a few rumbles, head tilting into each of their strokes and giving them a lick or two when they least expected it.

At Sokka's reassurance, Korra nodded in agreement with a smile. Sure, she didn't have any other benders to train with, but she had already been trained in how to bend water, earth and fire. She'd bent them practically all her life! Air might be a little trickier, but she'd cross that bridge when she came to it. The Avatar was confident that as soon as she got her bending abilities back, it'd come back to her. Much like how Earthbending was steadily coming back to her. "Rock it, huh?" She noted with an amused grin. "I won't just rock it, I'll blow everyone away!"

After she finished her earthbending move, she crossed her arms confidently and looked over her handiwork. "Yeah. If the world starts ending again, I think earthbending's going to really come in handy!" It was a shame though, that she didn't have Lin here anymore. With her earthbending back she had always wanted to try to metalbend. But without a metalbender she doubted she could do it. She had never tried to do it before, she wasn't even sure how much like earthbending it was. It seemed so...complex. Korra turned back to Sokka. "You think that's enough or should I try a few more moves?"

Sokka certainly appreciated Naga's affection, especially given the happy occasion they'd found themselves in this afternoon. Both he and Korra were already in high spirits, and the polar bear dog's own displays of happiness just added to it all. Today was already a great one, and he had a feeling it was only going to get better from here!

Returning Korra's amused grin with one of his own as she echoed his joke, Sokka soon laughed at her assessment about blowing everyone away. "Ha-ha, that you will! They won't be able to take the heat!" Whether it took her about the same amount of time in between each remaining element or less, he had full confidence that Korra would be back to her full Avatar self before she knew it. He was set to be there for her every step of the way, and he had a strong feeling that today was just a marker of many good things to come for both of them.

Nodding in agreement with the idea of her newly recovered earthbending helping out for the next Breach-wide crisis they got pulled into, Sokka grinned and exclaimed, "I know it will! Just having you here will help out big time! And that stands whether we're on the front lines or not." This world had a wide range of events that hit it after all, and no matter where any of them found the Water Tribe duo, he was sure that Korra would be able to take anything that came here way.

At Korra's question, he brought a hand up to his chin and thought for a moment, humming before answering. "I think that's a good start and more than enough to prove that you've definitely got it back," noted Sokka, nodding to his friend. His smile began to take on a bit of a playful look though as he added, "You can try a few more moves… or, if you'd like… we could even spar out here." Whilst he had no bending of his own, Sokka certainly had plenty of experience in fighting and sparring with various benders, Korra included, and this was a part of his promise to help her in any way he could. Whether she wanted to spar or not was completely up to her; at this point, he was just happy that she'd recovered her next major ability.

Korra's grin widened at Sokka's pun, she had been having trouble coming up with one that related to firebending. Leave it to Sokka to find some wordplay that did the trick. "Yeah, they'll just have to cool down!" And it came full circle back to water. It'd have been even funnier if they could have got it in the Avatar cycle order, but it was still kinda funny as it was. As for her 'Avatar'ness coming in handy, she had to agree. Of course, this world wasn't her world and this city wasn't Republic City. No one was looking to her to save them, even though she had been readying herself for it all her life. The break was nice, and especially not to be in the public eye, having people second guess what she was doing like they did with Amon.

Though some part of her still wanted to help keep balance in this world. The Avatar instinct was still there, she still wanted to help people. Though after everything that had happened, from Sokka dying to Naga getting hurt to Tenzin and Lin disappearing like they had, it felt like she couldn't handle doing it just yet. But now with her Earthbending back...she felt more confident. She was getting closer to the Avatar she was supposed to be, and it did wonders for her confidence. "No matter where we are, when the world needs our help again, we'll be there for it."

Korra watched Sokka ponder, eager to hear what he thought. Definitely true, she had done enough tricks that they definitely knew her Earthbending was back. No flukes or coincidental earthquakes here! Her Earthbending was here, and hopefully here to stay! The Avatar's head tilted at the playful look, a little confused, until the offer was fully given. Grinning from ear to ear, she rolled her shoulders and cracked her knuckles. "I think sparring is a great idea! So how do you want to do this?"

Sokka couldn't help but laugh at Korra's next pun, inwardly feeling rather proud of their latest wordplay exchange here. Puns and similar jokes were a very clever form of humor, and he always loved the way that he and his best friend were able to bounce off of each other with them. The only thing missing here was the order they'd pulled the element references off in, but even then, it had still worked out just fine. Since they'd covered all four elements though… "I'm sure you'll be in just the state to make them!"

This world might not have been their own, so even though the Avatar was not as inherently integral to holding its balance as it was back there, Sokka was still confident that having Korra around was a serious boon for the Breach. She could still help people, whether it was on an individual level or even on a world-wide scale, and he knew that she was fully capable of that no matter where she stood in her available abilities. From the good news they'd discovered today, Sokka could certainly see the increased assurance in his friends' eyes, and at Korra's words about the world needing them, he simply nodded. "Exactly. If this is to be our second home, we'll be set to make sure we keep it safe."

Sokka's smile shifted into a full-on grin at catching Korra's broad one, and at her eager response, he soon noted, "Well, considering that you just got earthbending back, I'd say it might be best for you to focus primarily on it. We can treat this like any of our other spars, just with us attacking and defending until we're ready to call it. How does that sound?" Their spars could get pretty intense, but they were never anything that the duo couldn't handle. They were both tough, and if things happened to get a little too rough, one of them happened to be a skilled healer.
