    Practice Makes Perfect!

Research and books could only get you so far. One couldn't expect to master a new skill without a bit of practice...but a mentor of some kind would also be useful. Ariana had taken Fear's advice, putting a notice on the board seeking the aid of any who knew archery. But, after two months, there had been no answer. Ariana Lee was a patient woman, but even she had her limits. Having researched the different styles of archery, the young woman had chosen bowhunting as the style she wanted to learn most. Field and target were good for practice, but bowhunting related to her endgame of defending herself with the bow. To strike moving, living targets that didn't necessarily have to be animals.

A compound bow had been purchased from a hunting shop, the draw length properly measured according to her arm span. Between the choices of bare or ready-to-shoot, she'd chosen the latter option. Arrows had been purchased, and with that, the young woman packed her backpack. Sunday was her day off, which meant she could go travel to the woods and not worry about work. Bottles of water had been packed away, two sandwiches stashed away in a ziplock baggy, sticks of beef jerky, a roll of gauze and a few of the beginner manuals she had borrowed from the library. She left early, dressed for the warmer weather and woodsy terrain. Her black hair was pulled back out of her face, as the slender young woman traversed through the grasslands and into the treeline. Sticks crunched beneath the soles of her shoes as she kept to the edges of the forest. A hand reached out, lightly rubbing against the rough bark as she inspected the trees closely. Only once she reached an old tree, bark crumbling under the lightest touch from rot, did Ariana come to a stop.

Shrugging off her bag, the young woman set it down by the base of one of the healthy trees as she pulled out her bow and arrows. Her left hand remained steady on the grip of the bow, her other hand busy sliding the arrow into place and onto the arrow rest. Ariana's grip was steady, as she stepped away from the told tree until she was thirty feet away. Holding it ready in front of her, her right hand raised up. Her thumb, pointer and middle fingers grasped the bowstring, pulling the arrow back with it until the line was taut. Her heart pounded in her throat, adrenaline surging through her body. For all of her books and studying, this was her first time actually holding the bow in her hands with the intent to fire off an arrow. Ariana took a deep breath, bow steady as she aimed for the middle of the trunk. Narrowing her eyes, her fingers released the string.

    Pew!

The arrow flew through the air...and it seemed she was too far from the tree. For the arrow shot out of the bow and fell short of the tree. It pierced the dirt, the end of it raised up like a flag to signal her failure. Her shoulders sagged, a lip jutting out in disappointment. "Hmph..." Alright, maybe the string wasn't as taut as she thought it was... It certainly felt stiff and strong in her grasp! She loaded up bow after bow, firing three more arrows.

    Pew! Pew! Pew!

One struck the ground only five feet from her, Ariana having accidentally released the string before she was ready, another striking the ground close to her first arrow and the last managed to strike into a tree root. Neither had struck the intended mark however, and it made her grumble. "I've got a lot of work to do if I'm ever gonna use this in a fight..." If she couldn't even hit a tree, how was she supposed to get a moving target?! Holding the bow loosely by her side, Ariana walked forward to the tree and plucked every arrow out of their targets along the way. Dirt was shaken off of the first three arrows, easily removed from the ground. The last arrow needed an extra pull to free it from the bark, though it was far quicker to clean. This would be much easier with a mentor but...we have to work with what we have. And at least there was no one around to see this, right?

And at least there was no one around to see this, right?

    Oh if only, if only...

Golden eyes remained transfixed upon the bespectacled human, ears as black as tar ever so lazily swiveling. Look at this scrawny thing, thinking to make use of a bow and arrow... The display was pathetic - laughable, really. Thrice had the woman fired her weapon and thrice did she make a grand novice of herself. It supposed that her spirit ought to be commended... Pity points were hardly worth much, of course.

From up in a nearby tree yawned a lethargic black cat, its coat plush and its belly quite fed. The smiling feline cleaned its forepaws out of boredom, as cats were wont to do, and thought little of the world around it. Self-importance quickly came to mind. It hadn't a care in all the known universe as it stared down upon the struggling Ariana, its squinted eyes pooling with smug condescension. Go on now, child... Pick up your tools of war and continue with your little performance. And, if it so suited you, read your tomes of knowledge once you could no longer stomach defeat. Whichever came first. Either way, the cat knew that it was surely in for a good distraction from the day's mediocre happenings.

It yawned again and exposed its plump belly to the sun, tail idly curling.

Slim fingers picked around the arrowhead, flicking away every bit of dirt as Ariana walked her way back to her starting point. The arrows were arranged in her hand like a bouquet of flowers, the arrow end pointing down and away from her face. Though that didn't stop a quiver or two from bopping against her cheek idly and drawing a small noise of discontentment at the feeling. Her performance had been disappointing, but that was reality. Without any actual practice, she couldn't very well expect to instantly fire off five shots and hit bulls eye with every one. Even Robin Hood had to start somewhere!

Setting all but one of the arrows aside, she readied her bow to fire off another shot. Before Ariana could pull the bowstring and let it fly, a breeze wafted by. The young woman was distracted, sniffing lightly as multiple scents lingered in her nose. Nature of course, that was a thick smell. Leaves, wood, even a hint of flowers from the grasslands. She could smell squirrels, a few deer, and...oddly enough, feline. The scent made her pause, eyebrows furrowing behind her glasses. It wasn't as odd as the feline scent she once smelled while hunting in the forest with another wolf. Yet, it also didn't smell like a wildcat. It smelled like...a normal cat! "Hm...' Hope nothing ate that cat... What was a domestic feline doing in the woods?

Shrugging lightly to herself, Ariana held her bow at the ready. Hands with a steady grip, her fingers hooked around the string and pulled it back as far as she could. Lining up her shot, she aimed for the center of the tree trunk yet again. Her muscles tensed as much as they could, letting the tension build in the string before she suddenly released it.

    TWIP

Much to her surprise, she hit it! Ariana stared after the arrow, from where it had sliced into the very center of the tree trunk. After a brief, slack-jawed moment of gawking, she threw her hands up in the air. "Ha!" She hit it! Her first one! Her first actual hit on a 'target'! The young woman whooped excitedly, a swell of pride in her chest. It wasn't much, but it still felt nice.

    Plunk!

    Well, well, well...

They say pride cometh before the fall, and yet the woman's endeavours merited celebration. Remarkably (if not miraculously), she had managed to nail her stationary target with a tried and true arrow. In the tree's center, even. Perhaps the woman's glasses had pitied her earlier performance and granted her better sight? Whatever boon it may be, the cat was hardly impressed. Though it purred happily and was seemingly at ease in these dark and treacherous woods, a more sinister intellect began collecting itself beneath all that ebony fur and agile bone. So... you think to try your hand at a traditional weapon? asked a soft, raspy voice. It came from nowhere and yet everywhere, the woman's head filled with its gentle, sibilant whisper. Tell me, mortal, for I am curious... Why are you out here, alone in this isolated forest, practicing with a bow and arrow? It supposed, and with a rather bored air, that the woman was attempting to protect herself. And if not protect, then to take. Alas, mortals were terribly predictable creatures...

One arrow had made its mark, now it was time to test her luck. Drawing another arrow, Ariana settled it onto the notch of her bow and pulled the drawstring back. Fingers clenched, the muscles of her arm tensed as the string became taut. Just have to aim... That's it, point the arrowhead at the trunk... Almost...!

So... you think to try your hand at a traditional weapon?

"Ah-!" A startled squeak sounded from her, jolting as her fingers released the string before she was ready. Away the arrow flew, past the tree and into the dark brush beyond. A thick noise sounded, as it landed in the grass and far from her mark. Ariana paid it no mind however, bow by her side as her amber eyes swept the area through glass lenses. Giving the area a thorough look, she found nothing to indicate there was anybody else here! Moreover, as she tried to ponder what direction the voice had come from, she realized... It didn't come from any direction at all! The voice continued, reverberating through her skull and sounding as if it came from all around. A gentle whisper, almost disarming... Her instincts told her otherwise, hair along the back of her neck and her arms rising up like soldiers at attention. Keeping her steps light, the young woman began to walk until her back rubbed against the rough bark of a tree. Pressing herself against it, Ariana took a deep breath to steel herself.

"I-I will answer your question, but only if you answer one f-for me." Ariana knew better than to just spill her life's details to any old random voice that suddenly popped up in her brain. Mr. and Mrs. Lee didn't raise no fool! Still...unable to tell what this voice was or what intentions it had, the young woman would try to keep her wits about her. She grit her teeth, eyes darting wildly as she waited to hear the answer. If she had to, she would run. Just had to hope she could run fast enough.

    Ffffwunk!

Disembodied chuckling knocked about in the woman's skull. Another miss? Such a pity... teased the voice. From its perch high up in a tree, the black cat couldn't but purr, purr, purr. It rolled onto its back and lounged, belly soaking up the sun's gentle rays. You are afraid... Good. That is smart of you, mortal. Arrogance is most unbecoming of a young lady. Now, what is this about answering a question for a question? The feline oh so loved a good game, though it had doubts about the entertainment value of this one. A question for a question only matters when both parties have neither an advantage nor a disadvantage, came a knowing whisper. Are you to imply, mortal, that you have enough power and renown to make such a demand of an entity far greater than the might of all men combined? Now that, see, was highly entertaining. Perhaps it should do away with her after all, or perhaps it should play her game like a cat would a mouse. Decisions, decisions...

Very well, it answered, raspy and dripping with amusement. I will humour your curiosity, mortal; it would be a waste to expend the energy needed reducing you into a screaming crisp. Ask your question and I shall faithfully answer.

A hand came up, pressing against the side of her skull and pushing aside hair as the chuckling echoed within her mind. Of all times...the one time she came out here to practice some archery, and she wound up running into some....thing. Something spooky. Short nails nipped into her scalp, a hissing sounding from the young woman as the skin of her arms rippled like waves on a pond. "I-it can't be helped..." Ariana offered weakly, the voice apparently amused by her startled misfire. She almost barked a laugh, managing an uneasy chuckle as it pointed out her fear and commended her for it. As if she could ever be arrogant! Especially in the face of an unknown danger. Perhaps the werewolf could puff some hot air, but this wasn't a tribe of savage people in a jungle, this was... Okay, she didn't know what it was. All she knew was that it felt bad.

Shaking her head lightly, Ariana attempted to regulate her breathing as her brain sorted through the verbal gymnastics of her invisible "companion". "N-no, I'm not implying that. It's just...fair. And it guarantees you an answer, doesn't it? I don't have to tell you, but i-if you answer something for me... I'm obligated to answer!" Whether it was simple curiosity or not, this being revealed itself to ask such a simple question, which meant it would rather have an answer. As for power, Ariana was stronger than she seemed. But...she didn't know what she was up against. If this thing was a pipsqueak, he wouldn't feel half as frightening as he did now.

She managed a deeper gasp of air, palm sliding down and off of her own head to dangle by her side as the voice relented, amused by her gamble. A question for a question, as burning her to a crisp (?!?) would waste too much energy. Nodding lightly, Ariana's fingers braced themselves against the bark, knuckles paling from the effort. "A-alright...my question is...'what are you?'." Short, simple, and to the point. The young woman held her breath, steeling herself in case it deemed her question useless and decided to attack. Pale flesh rippled once again, little vibrations tingling its way from her shoulders to her fingertips, spreading to create a similar effect on the rest of her skin that was bared. From her button nose and thin cheeks, to her slender legs. Teeth gritted as she held back, anxiety building like a dam against her wall of resolve.

An otherwise... interesting premise, it supposed. Fairness is a luxury, never a guarantee, answered the voice. Still, you display an acceptable level of competence; how I tire of obliterating the impetuous. And this she-wolf was anything but, for her body reeked of fear. Delightful, delightful... Though, as for her question?

    HA HA HA!

Laughter was at first her answer. The question to beget all questions, I see! Predictable, but nonetheless amusing... Ah, but how to respond? Surely it could not forfeit the truth - not directly. The she-wolf was undoubtedly insignificant in the grand scope of things, yet she was not without companions. Up above, the black cat lounging on the tree branch sunk its claws into coarse bark, tail idly curling to and fro. Perhaps it should begin with the basics... Mortals were simple creatures, no? A god, came the reply. There was more. An eater of worlds and a devourer of souls... An ancient force that which the likes of your fledgling kind have never seen. I, mortal, am eternal - a concept that can never truly die. Satisfied with itself, the hellish feline purred. Does that appease your curiosity, she-wolf?

Fairness is a luxury, never a guarantee,

Oh, that boded well, that did! An uneasy chuckle squeaked out, smile uneven and wavy. Like the smile of a Jack O'Lantern carved by a small child who was not skilled with knives. Still, it decided to play along. Not to be 'fair' to her, but because it found her...competent. Impetuous was definitely not a trait of Ariana's, the werewolf more likely to play a patient and thoughtful sort of game. It sounded that this creature may think similarly.

Many things had been expected, though at the top of Ariana's list had been great pain and then darkness. So when a sudden laughter rang out instead she couldn't help but to flinch and subconsciously hold her breath for the moment. Did it hate her question? Was it annoyed? Did the amusement mean she had no other use for this thing?! Only when it spoke did she begin breathing again, though only barely. Predictable but amusing...that was fair enough. When the voice finally went into detail, air was coming to her in more regulated bursts, no longer huffing and puffing for it. The answer wasn't exactly helping her anxiety though. A god?! An evil one by the sounds of it, or perhaps just a scary one. An ancient being, an eternal force, one that ate worlds and devoured souls. "W-what's a god doing in the middle of the forest?" Ariana questioned, the words slipping out before she could really think. She was honestly befuddled. The owner of this scary voice sounded like something quite old, and evil. Most Gods didn't just sit somewhere and shoot the shit with strangers...so why did this one? Perhaps there were other plans in store, and Ariana could only hope they didn't involve devouring her soul.

"Y-yes, thank you. That...definitely answers that question." She had wanted to know what she was up against and...boy, it wasn't looking good! A werewolf versus a God?! Even though Ariana had helped to fight Alpha, she was hardly on her own as she was out here! Remembering that she still had a question to answer, the young woman swallowed, licked her lips, and spoke up again. "As for why I'm out here...I've been...trying to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow. I had put up a notice sign asking for help but...no one's answered yet. I figured, maybe I could come out here and practice on my own! Apparently I still should have brought along a buddy or something..." Perhaps time in the city had made her forget just how dangerous it could be out here... Alas. Sinking down to a crouched position, back still to the bark of the tree, Ariana's chin settled upon one knee. Both hands still grasped at the trunk, especially the roots she could now reach. "I wanted to sort of...work on my defenses, you know? So that I could fight better. I can't always turn into a werewolf to fight. I need to fight in this form too."

What is a god doing in the middle of a forest? Hmm... a good question, it answered. Perhaps even the deity was confused with today's peculiar circumstances, though such matters hardly merited a deeper glance. I suppose one could say that I am... oh, what is the mortal term - bored? Yes, I believe that is the proper expression in mortal tongue. And bored gods were seldom a good thing; how fortunate for her, then, that Ariana had met an all-powerful force with more restraint than the average supreme being. That wasn't every day, you know...

"As for why I'm out here...I've been...trying to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow. I had put up a notice sign asking for help but...no one's answered yet. I figured, maybe I could come out here and practice on my own! Apparently I still should have brought along a buddy or something... I wanted to sort of...work on my defenses, you know? So that I could fight better. I can't always turn into a werewolf to fight. I need to fight in this form too."

    Music to it ears.

No more hiding, no more smoke and mirrors. The time had come for revelation.

Without ample warning or announcement, a shadow glided over the woman's head and landed a mere few paces away. It huddled there, twitching ever so faintly while contorting to face her. And it was then, when a pair of golden eyes met with hers, that Ariana would be able to realize the truth for herself. It had not been a shadow, but a...

    "Mrow!"

But a cat, and a rather plump one at that. Black was its fur, thick and a striking black, and it moved with an almost ethereal grace. Then again, was this not true for all felines?

It sauntered over toward her lazily, whiskers brushing up against her legs as it repeatedly rubbed its plush coat upon Ariana's skin and clothing. Power... whispered the voice. Its words echoed within her thoughts, soft and inviting. Power is not a weapon but a state of mind. You can no sooner wield a bow and arrow if you cannot grasp the concept of strength. Confidence, mortal, confidence. The cat paused to clean itself, its pink tongue licking a paw coarsely. I would have thought that a wolf-child, of all things, would be competent enough to hunt and kill with outmatched efficacy...

A good question, or so the God dubbed it. The answer was a bit...debatable. Scared as the young woman, her face scrunched up as if unable to believe what it had said. Bored? You'd think that anyone with the powers of a God wouldn't wind up bored enough to wander the woods. "Oh...I see." Ariana could only hope that the God didn't mind talking to rid itself of its boredom. She wasn't sure if she could stand magical mischief or...well, being killed.

Holding a hand up to shield her face, Ariana squinted behind her glasses as a dark shape seemed to pass by overhead. Initially willing to write it off as a bird flying by, she quickly realized she had company. One of the feline persuasion, with intelligent golden eyes and deep black fur. Plump as it was, the cat was full of grace and the stare in its eyes was hardly normal. Quite brave too, since most cats weren't quite fond of Ariana. Trotting over, it began to rub its body against the skin of her legs, and her lips quirked at the sensation. A leg twitched, the young woman wondering if letting it rub up on her was such a good idea. Then again, what was the alternative? Even seemingly taking the form of a cat, it seems the God she had managed to find preferred telepathy. The voice in her head spoke up once more, the soft words seemingly not impressed with her reason for being out here. Power had nothing to do with a weapon, but a state of mind, insisted the cat. In order to have a powerful state of mind, confidence was needed, and Ariana found she could not argue with that. Chewing on her lower lip lightly, the young werewolf sighed. "I'm not...a very confident person." Something it no doubt picked up on, being a God and in her head.

I would have thought that a wolf-child, of all things, would be competent enough to hunt and kill with outmatched efficacy...

Now that part, Ariana did take offense with. Frowning, she reached a tentative hand down to stroke at the ebony fur. "I never said I wasn't competent enough to hunt and kill, especially when I'm...you know, a wolf. But when I'm a human, I don't have fangs and claws. Wouldn't it be smart to find a way to defend myself like this?" It wouldn't due to be completely helpless when she wasn't transformed. You know, in case Ariana ever ventured out into the forest alone and ran into evil Gods! ...Hm, perhaps it was too late to try and be proactive. Pinching the hem of her shorts with her other hand, a thumb brushed over the stitching as Ariana scowled lightly. "Plus, my clothes don't exactly regenerate when I transform..." That point very much spoke for itself.

    "Mrrr..."

Ariana's gentle touch had not gone unnoticed, nor without whimsical gratitude. Now then... what's this about lacking the confidence to wield a formidable weapon and the ability to choose it wisely? The cat opened a lazy golden eye and purred, its plush belly filled with rumbles. I personally think you are going about it all wrong, whispered the entity. Always the provocateur, several dainty paws kneaded into the woman's thigh before the cat decided that her lap was a suitable place of rest. It curled upon her happily and felt right at home, whether it was wanted or not. You mortals and your piddly little things... it yawned. I'm afraid you are thinking far too small, yes. What good is a bow and arrow, or any ranged weapon, when it requires that you must be within the vicinity of both prey and predator? Foolish, so very foolish. There was a point to this, it promised.

Glancing up at her with those same, lethargic eyes, the cat furled its paws beneath its luscious coat and seemingly "smiled". Why turn into a wolf in the first place? Why confront an otherwise perilous situation that could be avoided? it inquired. Why not, perhaps, master the art of power and control when and where you must fight? Perhaps the bespectacled woman would climb this mountain of logic, and perhaps she would flounder upon its stones.

Either way, both were hardly surprising.

So timid are you, like a mouse buried within wolf's clothing... No weapon held in your hands will ever command respect - how can it, when you lack the grace and maturity? The greatest weapon known to mortal kind, she-wolf, is not an object but an idea. If you desire to protect yourself and be taken seriously, then you must unlock the potential of the mind - of cunning, of resolve, of fear. And at these words, nestled deep underneath her clothing, did a fledgling desire stir. It was there, hidden in the places she dared not look, but if called upon it had the capability to seize great wonders. All the she-wolf need do is feed it.

"Aaw..." An amused little smile stretched across Ariana's lips as her fingertips roamed through the fur. You know, when you get over the whole 'really a scary God' thing, its decision to take the form of this cat was really cute! She'd never really had a cat before, only hamsters and fish. The time never seemed right when she was a human. After being bitten, cats were sometimes rather wary of her, as if they could smell what she really was. The purring nearly distracted her from what it said. "All wrong...?" She blinked as paws kneaded at her leg as if she was a mound of dough before the ebony cat climbed up onto her lap and made itself comfortable. Slender hands continued to stroke its back as she pursed her lips. "You have to be in the vicinity of your opponent no matter what, if you actually intend to hurt them. Things may be different for you, as a God, but no matter what... I do need to be in range." It wasn't as if Ariana could recline on her couch at the inn, wave a hand and kill a deer way out in the forest!

For some reason, this creature's unconcerned nature made her feel as if she'd disappointed it Like she was just some insignificant and silly...thing. Hanging her head, chocolate brown eyes met brilliant gold. "Master power and control...?" Her nose scrunched up at the thought, before the young woman shook her head. "You don't understand. I'm...I'm just me. The only power and control I could master is that of turning into a wolf." Ariana could hardly command a fight only when she wished to. Unless she tracked someone down and muscled them into doing what she wanted, she surely couldn't control when and where she fought, either.

So timid are you, like a mouse buried within wolf's clothing... No weapon held in your hands will ever command respect - how can it, when you lack the grace and maturity?

Rather than get angry at the feline's words, she only felt melancholy slither in her chest like an unwelcome snake that coiled up tightly. Ariana was a coward, intimidated by the mere presence of others. Intimidated by herself. How could she use fear like a weapon, when it seemed to be shackled to her? When it controlled her so. Throat clenching, her head bobbed forward and locks of her hair swept over her ear to partially hide her face. To beat fear, one must master it. Maybe if she could, she wouldn't need to practice with a bow to feel secure. To feel as if, were she attacked by someone she could still defend herself. All the young woman wanted, was to control herself and her emotions better. Maybe if she hadn't been such a doormat, so timid and afraid... She could have gotten Skyler's attention before the cyborg disappeared.

A brief sniffle came from her, before Ariana tilted her gaze back down to the false feline. Swallowing thickly, she raised a finger to scratch behind a black ear. "How...how do I unlock that potential? Where do I begin?"

"How...how do I unlock that potential? Where do I begin?"

    Tch, mortals... What delightful playthings.

The more Ariana pampered the feline with tender strokes and scratches, the more it purred and purred and purred. Nothing, however, made it happier than to greedily taste her bubbling insecurities. A pink tongue licked its velvety lips. Just you... the voice echoed softly, fading within Ariana's mind. Just you... a timid, weak, and cowardly little girl... Heartsick and pained with regret. It leaned into her abdomen, back arched, and spoke knowingly. Fear is the greatest of all teachers, purred the 'god'. To master fear, is to master oneself. It teaches mortals discipline, prudence, and to respect the frailty of life, fueling their creative ingenuity to further prolong their meager existences. Without fear, child, a great many fledgling races would have seen an untimely... demise. It was fear, after all, that compelled mortals to value their self-preservation; but too much fear, and it would assert itself as lord and king. Such was the case of Ariana. It was now that the disguised entity answered her question.

You begin at the foundation, it mused, your immortal soul. No growth can come of a neglected husk; can a feeble seed thrive in a barren waste? The inquiry was rhetorical, for it expected her to already know the answer. Again, padded paws kneaded into her clothing. What frightens you the most, hmm? What gnaws at the roots of your being, driving you to an endless cycle of self-inflicted agony?

It had gleaned the truth long ago, but it was just oh so more delicious hearing the words out of her mouth.
