Not a Yellow Brick Road in Sight

Post by Diana Ridley on Thu May 04, 2017 3:34 am

    DATE: MAY 3RD

As Diana stepped out of the portal she was surprised to find herself... In more wooded area. Great. But after a brief cursory glance around she found that she was definitely not where she had once been. The trees, the trees were different. And the path she had started out from was nowhere to be seen, let alone the glow of the parking lot. Diana chewed on her lip a bit, what honestly possessed her into thinking walking through a mysterious glowing portal was a good idea? How is that ever a good idea? She sighed and rubbed her temples. Calm down, Diana, it's fine, it's going to be fine.

It was in then she spotted yet another glow in the distance, and while following a mysterious light source got her into this situation to begin with it was certainly a better option than just standing in some strange forest in the middle of the night. She made her way towards the glow with seemed to come from a building, a homey looking tavern from the looks of it. Certainly there would be people that would know where she was in there. It was definitely better than just standing around outside. She climbed the stairs up to the front door, her heels making soft clicks as she did until she paused at the doorway. Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves she first rapped her knuckles on the door. "Hello?" She called before timidly pushing the door open.

As you step inside, you hear...:

A quiet chatter escaped as the door was pushed open, the bar full of individuals, most with backpacks or bags still wrapped around their backs or placed closely to their feet on the floor. The music from the jukebox echoed through out the building, mixing with the aroma of ale and spices that lingered heavily in the air. To the left there, the bar and a few places to sit table-wise, and to the right, some gathered around a pool table, the clacking of the balls intertwining for an interesting atmosphere. All in all, it was just a tavern with a few travelers lingering about, getting their fill of entertainment and food before heading out into the world.

The bartender currently, a stony, speckle-faced winged creature, merely glanced at the young woman who entered, having to do a double-take. Blinking, he shook his head, perhaps mistaking her for someone else, eyes focusing on the kitchen door across the way. Though nothing was said, the kitchen door was swung open and out came a large purple furry... daemon. Try imagining him as anything else--it'd be hard to do so. Not with those horns. Claws scratched at the back of the daemon's head, spiked fur being patted down as Boon's white eyes gave the girl a once-over, a large grin appearing on his face.

"Well hey there, darlin'~! Ain't ya just th' prettiest lil' human!" Collins rolled his eyes, saying nothing as Boon knelt down before Diana, holding out a hand to her casually. "Welcome to th' Moonshine Tavern! What can I do ya for...? Bar's kinda full but there's still some good seats 'round!" That fanged grin never even wavered from the purple mug with each word, tail flicking in an excited and intrigued manner.

Boon and Collins are currently the only workers at the tavern.

The music she was met with as she walked in was lovely, certainly a piece she would love to learn how to play in the future if she got the chance. The building looked like... Well... An ordinary tavern at first glance. Just a bunch of people eating or drinking, some playing pool off to the side. When her green eyes landed on the bar she had to do a double take. Was that... What was that? Her brows raised as she continued to look over at the stony faced being. Maybe-maybe it was a costume? Diana tried so very hard to believe that was a costume, but even from this distance it was just... Too realistic, not even the best of Hollywood's special effects could do that.

"What in blazes..." She murmured before she heard the swinging of a door, tearing her eyes away from the gargoyle her eyes grew wide as she looked up... And up... And up to face the purple furred daemon. If she could have grown any paler she would have, and she was sure her mouth had dropped open slightly in her shock. Diana quickly closed her mouth as he knelt closer to her level, this close he could probably see her trembling. Definitely too real, way too real.

"Well hey there, darlin'~! Ain't ya just th' prettiest lil' human!"

At this the young woman blinked in surprise, her cheeks turned a light pink as she was pretty sure that... This daemon, monster? was flirting with her. Okay, calm down Diana. Just... Play it cool, you can do this. She placed a hand in the large one offered to her, it was a little shakier than she would have liked. "Th-thank you, sugah. I'm... I'm afraid I'm a little lost, could you help me, hon?" For a little added effect, seeing as her speech was a bit shaky, she tilted her head to the side a bit and bat her eyes up at him.

That fear hadn't gone unnoticed, and Boon's hand gently cupped the woman's, being careful of his claws. "Well lookit you, darlin', just shiverin' like a leaf!" Poor girl, she was definitely new. That lost look in those eyes, the trembling and worry of her surroundings... that was a familiar look. One they saw a lot! A lot more than usual, actually. The daemon stood up straight, hand still kindly attached to her own and began leading the woman over to the right side, where a fireplace was brought into view. "Why don't ya take a load off, huh?" he suggested, making sure the girl wasn't left alone. He turned to the gargoyle bartender, as if waiting for a signal, but was only giving a small shrug and nod.

"Th-thank you, sugah. I'm... I'm afraid I'm a little lost, could you help me, hon?"

    Oh, but that voice...

The daemon's grin could only get a bit wider at hearing such a cute voice and accent, something that he was familiar with. "Don't you worry that pretty lil' head! You just get comfy and I'll help ya out! Name's Boon, by the way~" There were some antique looking armchairs near the fireplace if she so desired to sit, or maybe instead on the lush, plush carpet that was sprawled out in front of them. Wherever she chose, Boon was completely focused on her!

"Now lemme guess here..." he started, his other hand scratching his cheek in thought, the grin turning into a small, fanged smirk. "Ya came here through a blue portal, right?" Obviously--but he just needed to make sure. She was a cute human and all, but hey, everyone held a secret or two...

Diana couldn't help but blush a little deeper, goodness could she have been any more obvious about her unease? She expected better of herself. She followed the daemon, a little surprised at just how gentle he was being with her. The woman let herself be lead towards a cozy little area next to a fireplace, an upward quirk of her lips revealed pinpoints of sharp white teeth as she looked up to her companion. "It's quite lovely here, thank you." She said, managing to keep her voice even. Better Diana, much better.

She took a seat on one of the chairs, though she had to admit that the carpet looked quite plush and comfy as well, but the chair would probably be the easier option to get out of later. The young woman had to crane her head back to look up at Boon again. He looked pretty intimidating but if his words and actions so far were anything to go by he was just a big ol' fluffy looking teddy bear, and that certainly made her feel better. He was definitely more of a gentleman than many of the boys she went to school with. "A pleasure to meet you, Boon, ah'm Diana, Diana Ridley." She offered him a sweet smile as she introduced herself.

With a nod she answered his question. "Mhm, it was quite the phenomenon, I just couldn't help mahself." She blushed again and looked to the side, using her own free hand to twirl a finger in her curly hair.

There was a name to this stranger! Diana Ridley, she called herself. Quite a pretty name, very feminine... and fitting, he thought, giving a nod and a small smile. "Got yerself a great name there~! Pleasure t' meet ya, Miss Ridley!" The daemon tenderly pecked the back of Diana's hand before finally releasing it and casually leaning against the armchair, arm folded over the back as Boon's expression changed to a more thoughtful one. Yeah, those portals... "They're pretty enchantin', huh? 'Course I stumbled like a ditz through one years ago with m' buds..." the full details on that were left mysterious for reasons, but the daemon continued. "S-sorry t' say this, Miss Ridley, but yer kinda..."

Boon's mouth closed into one of confusion and frustration, trying to find the words to tell the pretty lady that she was basically stuck here. What if she cried?? His heart couldn't handle a girl crying for whatever reason, it just couldn't! The daemon turned his head to the bar, a worried expression on his face as his brow curled. The gargoyle glanced over, noticed the face immediately and began walking over, still just as expressionless as before. "What did you do?" "I--wha? N-nothin'!" "Hmmm..." the pupils behind the colored goggles glanced between Diana and Boon, that look of boredom smearing across his face. "Then what's wrong?" Boon gave a weak chuckle, trying to find his words.

"T-this is uh, Miss Ridley. Miss Ridley, this here's Collins." Okay, he was stalling. Collins gave the daemon a side-glare before bowing slightly forward. "Pleasure..." "See uh, she's new!" "Obviously..." The daemon huffed, a slight pout crossing his face as he tried to continue. "She found one 'o them portal thingies... why don't ya tell 'er a lil' bit 'bout this place, eh, Colly?" The gargoyle's ears fwipped down, like a dog hearing they had to take a bath. "Oh. I see how it is..." Boon couldn't handle making a woman cry, but Collins was all truths, lady. Even with those big doe eyes and curvy bod, no one was safe from the truth the gargoyle spoke.

"Well, Miss Ridley, I'll have to inform you that, by walking into a portal, you're now stuck here. We've been here for years, also stuck, but we made do. The best thing you can do now is try to find your bearings and figure out what you'll do here. There's free lodging available in the city, which I'm quite sure Boon here would be eager to escort you..." Boon only grinned. See? The stone-faced bat-thing only spoke truth. "Either way, you're free to linger here until Boon is available. The place should clear out in a few hours." Collins finally stopped speaking, letting the woman absorb that word-salad of information. Giving the daemon a look, the gargoyle returned to his post at the bar.

Boon knew better than to say anything, so instead, he knelt down once more on the side of the chair and gave Diana a soft, though uneasy smile and her hand a gentle pat. Giving her a few minutes to take all that in was the best he could do for now.

"Why thank you, sugah," She smiled back, quickly getting more at ease around the daemon. She had just gotten her thanks for his compliment out when he went and kissed her hand, and oh if that didn't get the romantic in her. Diana tried so very hard not to blush, really she did, but with her deathly pale skin it was hard not for it to show. Best to deflect it as quickly as possible. "Oh yes, indeed they are. I'd never seen anythin' like 'em, not even in the movies." She put a hand over her mouth as she let out a giggle at his short description of how he ended up here. "Oh I'm sure you're nothin' of the sort, hon, but it's good to know you didn't end up all by your lonesome."

"S-sorry t' say this, Miss Ridley, but yer kinda..."

Her smile faded as he trailed off, it seemed as though he was having a hard time getting the words out, had to mean it was bad news. Diana followed his gaze back towards the bar when the gargoyle who'd been manning it started on his way over. Green eyes flicked between her large purple companion and the stone faced bartender. She stood from her seat and inclined her head in a bow back to Collins upon being introduced to him. "Pleasure to meet you, hon." She said, offering up a slightly nervous smile as she sat back down.

Collins barely gave her much more time to think about it before he launched into an explanation. She blinked in surprise. Stuck here? Had she heard him correctly. But he couldn't-she could really be stuck here, forever, right? Her lips quivered and her eyes watery. But no, she wouldn't cry. She couldn't cry, she was a lady and she wasn't going to make a scene. She just wasn't. "Th-thank you, Collins." Diana managed to get out, quickly having to bite her lip to keep any whimpers from escaping her. When he left she turned her gaze back to Boon who gave her a soft smile and a few comforting pats to her hand. "So... I'll... I'll never see mah family again?" A tear rolled down her cheek unbidden. Don't lose it, Diana, please don't lose it.

    Aaaaaaaaaaand there was a tear.

    Oh no.

"W-well... I mean..." Boon stammered, mouth scrunching into various forms of uncertainty. It wouldn't actually be a lie to tell say 'sure, you'll see them again', because it was always possible... just... rarely heard of. The poor woman was already heartbroken over the news, and while Boon was glad the more apathetic Collins delivered such an ominous statement... he certainly didn't want her to feel so bad her first night here. "T' be honest, darlin', there's a possibility t' see yer family again. When...? N-not soon... but definitely sometime!" Hopefully that was an easier pill to swallow rather than Collins coming back over and bluntly telling her otherwise.

"I know it's raw deal, Miss Ridley. Can't change much about it other than tryin' yer best t' make do." There were a few more gentle pats to her delicate hands before the daemon spoke once more, "ah can answer any questions ya got--'r try to. Collins would uh... be more 'informative'," the daemon finger-quoted, "but I'd be happier t' help ya." Seeing a sweet face so downtrodden was a real pain in Boon's heart. Other than answering questions... what else could he do to make the young lady feel better...?

"Uh--y'all want somethin' to eat or drink? D-don't worry 'bout payin', s'on the house this time!" That fanged grin came back as his tail swayed along the carpet, hoping maybe that'd at least make Diana feel... a little better! Nothing like a good meal and drink to cry into, right...?

Diana quickly wiped the tear from her face, forcing herself to hold back any more tears. Oh, it was easy enough to cry on command when she needed it, but stopping actual tears? That was another story. And seeing poor Boon get all worked up over her, she sniffled. "You're such a sweetheart..." She gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "So... I may see at least one of them again?" She sniffled again. "I suppose that is better than no possibility at all."

She nodded at his words and wiped the remaining wetness from her face. "You're right, hon... I'm sorry for makin' such a mess of myself." Diana smiled up at him. "I'm sure you'll answer just fine. Thank you, Boon." Now, her first question would probably be the most obvious thing. "Where exactly are we?" She asked, deciding to take it easy on the questioning. It seemed as though she'd have a good portion of the night to figure some things out.

"Oh! I suppose I am a might peckish, lunch seems like it was a long time ago now." She frowned a bit. "Are you sure, though? I'd hate to be a bother." She was hungry, and some home cooked food sounded good right about now. She was oh so tired of her wretched diet that wasn't even working anyway.

"W-well I try..." The daemon blushed lightly at the compliment, "and yer not a mess~! Far from it!" Boon might not know too terribly much about the Breach other than the basics, but at least his answers would be short and to the point instead of Collins using big fancy words and sarcasm. "This here's the forest line--follow the road that'a way, and you'd get to t'city in no time! As fer this place itself? It's called Portal Breach. Kinda... on the nose, but it gets t'job done." The daemon gave a small shrug before another grin appeared on his face as the woman accepted his offer. "Burden? Nah! I do this allllll the time, darlin'." It was true; so many pretty ladies that came in here with surprisingly small bills when Boon was around. Collins was going to give the daemon a solid gut punch for their losses.

"What'cha in the mood fer, Miss Ridley?" Fur bristled as Boon turned his head and gave Collins a look, motioning with his hands for a menu. The gargoyle just squinted with a disgruntled expression before throwing a menu at the daemon's forehead, hitting it with a FWIP. "... Thanks." Brushing the spot softly with a finger, the menu was picked up and handed to Diana, that grin returning once eye contact was made. "Looky through this, there's lotsa nice stuff you could eat and Collins makes a good drink iffin'yer wantin' to uh... mellow out." Not get completely smashed, of course! But a nice strong drink could help.

Diana couldn't help but let out a giggle at Boon's flushed appearance and response to her compliment. Such a sweetheart~ She blushed a bit and flicked her wrist at him when he paid her another compliment of his own. "Oh, ahm sure you say that to all the ladies tha' need a shoulder ta' cry on." She said with yet another giggle, as well as directing a wink up towards him. "Portal Breach, huh... That is a wee bit on the nose." Diana agreed, her eyes glancing in the direction he said the city was in, she wondered if it would be a terribly long walk. Sure, she could walk a mile or so in her heels no problem but she didn't want them wearing out.

She smirked back at Boon when he told her that he'd done this before. "Ooh~ Really now?" He seemed to be a bit of a Casanova, well meaning and sweet as can be but about the biggest flirt she'd seen. When asked what she'd like the young woman tapped her chin with a finger as she thought about it. What did sound good to her... She didn't get very far in her thoughts when the daemon got beamed in the forehead with a menu, she let out a light gasp at that. "Oh sugah! Are you alright?" He seemed alright though, as he simply handed over the menu and grinned at her. She gave his hand a light couple of pats as she accepted it.

"Oh... Er... Do y'all have a drinkin' age round here?" Back home she was still a few weeks shy of being able to legally drink. Her parents had let her sip a bit of wine and champagne before of course, but she hadn't really thought of trying to drink until she'd hit her next birthday.

"Sure I do," the daemon admitted with a smile, "but I ain't never told a lady lies! Just plain rude t'do that... But I'll lie t'guys openly! Watch this," Boon's smile turned slightly devious as his head turned to the bar. "Heeeeey Collins!" The gargoyle's gaze went from a few leaving patrons to the daemon, giving him a dull look. "Yes?" "Ya look purty tonight~!" Collins eyebrow raised slightly, face melting into a grimace before shook his head and went back to making drinks. Boon returned his attention to Diana, a dumb grin greeting her. "See?" If that didn't prove anything... well, it proved many things. Many odd things. But mostly revenge.

    Anyway~

Drinking age...? Boon's grin turned into a curious look as he eyed the woman over once more. Had he pupils, she'd be able to tell exactly where he was looking... "Er--I mean, if yer under like, 16 'r somethin', I don't think I could give ya a drink with a clear conscience..." He was usually pretty good at telling people's age, particularly females, but Collins was extremely precise, almost as if he was psychic. A horrible thought, really. Before Diana could even respond, the daemon jolted upright, fur bristling as Collins appeared from behind him, holding a sunset daiquiri. "She's 20, she can have a drink," the gargoyle presented the daiquiri to her calmly while Boon tried to gather himself. "D-don't DO that! Yer gonna give me a heart-attack one'a these days!" "And wouldn't that be a tragedy..." Rolling his eyes, Collins returned to his post at the bar. Sticking his tongue out, Boon sneered a little before glaring at the drink.

"... Hm. That does look good." What is this, a contest?? "Well uh--lemme know how that tastes... but!" His grin returned as he knelt down once more, tail swaying quickly. "I can do ya better and make ya somethin' to eat! Nothin' like a good meal t'make ya feel right at--" noooo don't say that word! Say something else! "uhhhh comfortable place." Smooth. "Yer comfort's important, after all!" And bring it back in!

She couldn't help but giggle at Boons 'revenge' on Collins, the look on the others face at the compliment was probably enough to sour milk. Diana wondered if anything could make the poor dear smile, or at least be a little less grumpy. Still she smiled at Boon and his antics, what a wonderfully silly thing he was, she rather liked it. She giggled again when he turned back to her with that big ole smile of his to prove his point. "So ah see,"

Diana blinked once his expression turn into a curious look. She had the feeling he was looking her over and she wasn't sure if she wanted to know where exactly he was looking. Then again it surely wouldn't be the first time. "Oh no! Nothin' like that, hon." She reassured him, patting his hand softly, but before she could say her age Collins appeared out of nowhere like the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, he was about as spooky as 'im too. Diana about jumped at his sudden appearance, for a stony lookin' fella he could sure move about quickly and quietly. She blinked as he got her age right on the dot. "O-Oh, thank you, honey." The young woman took the drink offered to her, it looked lovely.

"Yes it does, tha' was nice of him, and don't worry honey ah will." She smiled at the daemon as he knelt down beside her, and bless his heart did he really try, goodness he was simply adorable as he avoided the 'h' word for her. She put both her hands over one of his and gave him what she hoped was a winning smile, even with her little fangs poking out, and a bat of her eyes. "Thank ya' so much, sugah." And as for food well... She gave her menu a once over. "Could ah please have the pecan Parmesan Rainbow Trout?" She asked.

A great choice! Boon's specialty was red meats, but he cooked a good fish, too! "Ya got it, darlin'~ I'll get that rarin' to go!" The daemon gave Diana a small pat on her curly head before standing, knees popping as he stood and went back to the kitchen, starting up that dish. It wouldn't take too long, but for about 10 or 15 minutes, Diana was left alone. The setting was at least comforting, right? The fire crackled and popped, the music lingered in the air and the quiet chattering of people wasn't too jarring for a new place. Could've been worse... she could've landed in certain areas with certain scarier and less kind individuals.

Collins every so often leaned over the counter of the bar, taking a glance at Diana to see if she needed anything, but ultimately didn't approach her, tending to his own devices. Comforting was not the gargoyle's strong suit, though he did try sometimes when he felt it was required. This, however, was best left to Boon, who was far more sensitive to a lady's feelings. There wasn't much they could do, either, other than help Diana get on her feet... which was about to become the next subject, as Boon reentered the room with a steaming plate of crusted fish, and a perfect scoop of fresh sweet potato mash.

"Here ya go, fresh off the stove! Be careful, it's hot!" Kneeling as if presenting her a royal crown, Boon placed the dish next to her on a small table, then rubbed his hands together as steam emitted from them. No mits were worn to protect him from the heat, but it looked like it wasn't a bother. "Now that mash there's one'a my specialties! Lulu really likes 'em, and I'm sure y'all will, too~" A hint of butter, a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg and just a little bit of fresh tiny marshmallows inside the scoop of potato would be awaiting Diana, perhaps reminding her of Thanksgiving or even Christmas dinners, if she had yams!

"I'll let ya eat and rest o' bit, but I gotta ask ya--you ain't been t' the city, right? Well, fer new folks, there's a nice inn there that lets ya lodge fer FREE!" His voice got so excited at that word, but for good reason. Free lodging was a hot commodity in most societies, after all. "Col and I stayed there fer a bit. It ain't too big, but it'll do t' job of a roof over yer pretty lil' head. Don't want ya walkin' around t' city without someplace safe to go!" Boon's tail twitched, the spines along it bristling a bit as the daemon thought about the Inn, and how far it'd be from here. "Iffin' yer wantin' t' go after yer all done and ready, I'll take ya there!"

"Thank you, honey." She smiled up at him until he pat her head, making her blush a tad bit. Goodness she felt like some kinda school girl with all the blushing she was doing tonight. Usually it took something embarrassing to make her blush, that or from the heat, but it almost never happened because of a boy and his flirting. It was a little perplexing, that was for sure.

Diana decided not to ponder on it too much, instead she thought about this strange new world and what sort of place she could make for herself here. She had never actually been on her own before. She'd been sheltered by her family her whole life, and even when she went off to college she wasn't alone, she'd had two housemates that lived with her just off campus. But here... She had no connections, no reputation to upkeep, not even much for possessions. It was all a bit... Overwhelming. Her heart rate went up the more she thought about it until she shook her head, trying to rid herself of the thoughts. Instead she focused on the lovely drink Collins had prepared her, she sipped on it as she waited for Boon to come back. Occasionally she saw the gargoyle look over at her and she made sure to smile and wave whenever she caught sight of him doing this.

The young woman smiled as the daemon reentered the room with her meal, and oh goodness it smelled and looked delicious. Once again he kneeled in front of her and put the dish on the table next to her. "Why thank you, sugah! This all looks wonderful! And don't worry, ah will." She pondered for a moment on his lack of hand wear to handle the dish, but maybe he was just resistant to heat? Diana'd have to remember to ask later. She looked down at the mash in question, and oh goodness did it make her think of many a home cooked meal her mema would prepare for special occasions. "Oh, ah'm sure ah'll love it, hon, it smells amazing!"

As she let the meal cool a bit Boon went on talking about Portal Breach, she gave him her full attention as he did and her eyes grew wide at the mention of a free inn. "Really? For free? My word... That's exceptionally convenient!" Oh thank goodness she wasn't going to have to sleep outside or something. That was very reassuring. "Well, small or not it'll have ta' do, and ah'm sure it'll be fine." She flicked her wrist lightly. "Thank you very much, Boon, ah'd really appreciate an escort at this time a' night."
