    Mother's Day Blues

Post by Marissa on Tue May 16, 2017 9:48 pm

    DATE: MAY 14TH, YEAR 8
    TIME: APPROX. 2:30 PM

Ever since Marissa came to the Breach, Mother's and Father's Day became upsetting times of year for her. It was horrible. The photo of the monstress and her parents at her college graduation no longer brought her happiness. She would see the happy tears in their eyes and remember just how much they loved and supported her. Looking at it, the furry monster would start to cry herself, and it was definitely not the happy kind of cry.

Marissa hated to face reality at times like these, but she just couldn't deny the fact that the picture no longer brought her joy, especially at this time of year. No amount of friends she made here could change the heartache she felt at the absence of her parents in her life. The tauric monster was painfully aware of the very real possibility that her parents no longer even existed. She didn't know what hurt more. That, or the chance that her parents were still alive and missing her greatly. The longer she thought about it, she leaned toward the latter.

At times like these, comfort food did wonders to ease Marissa' mind. Of course these feelings never fully went away, but they did help, if only just a little. As the monstress entered the Tavern, she contemplated a seat at the bar, but quickly realized that she would never be able to fit in one of the barstools. Come to think of it, the chairs at the tables wouldn't really do much for her either. But Marissa had an idea! She pushed two chairs as close to each other as they would go and flopped right over them. Satisfied, the monstress started perusing the menu.

Today was the day that Shaiamils would deviate from his regular Tavern dining schedule. Rather than stopping by for dinner, today the avian doctor would be dropping in for lunch. Just as expected, the Tavern wasn't very crowded yet. Most people tended to show up in the evenings. As the feathery alien entered the building, one of the patrons immediately caught his eye. A certain furry monster was situated at one of the tables, and Shai couldn't help but notice just how glum she looked. He really hoped that he wouldn't be overstepping his boundaries by what was about to follow.

"Hey there Marissa," Shaiamils greeted the monstress, sitting down in one of the chairs opposite of her. "Long time, no see! Mind if I join you? I'll be paying for mine, of course."

Marissa looked up from her menu. Whoever was talking to her certainly didn't sound like anyone she knew that worked here, but the voice was definitely familiar. Oh, it was Shaiamils! He came to the Drive-In from time to time and she sometimes managed to catch him on one of his regular visits to the Sanctuary.

"Hi, Shai! It's good to see you!" the monstress responded with as much cheer as she could muster. The avian's offer to accompany her took Marissa aback, but not in a bad way. Truthfully, she could probably use the company right about now. "Yeah, you can join me. That sounds lovely, actually."

The tauric monster slipped him a menu, actually managing to crack a tiny smile despite everything. Maybe today wouldn't be such a bummer after all?

    The jukebox is playing...:

Sunday wasn't a really busy day. Not a lot of people came around, but then again, it was still early! There was time for families or travelers to come through, the latter mostly coming from the forest after a camping trip or exploration, stopping for a drink and some food. While there wasn't a lot of people around, neither was there anyone on the floor working. Lunette was... somewhere. Maybe faffing about with or without a certain robot... Collins and Boon, however, were in the kitchen and fussing over something probably stupid.

"Look, you don't put the bowls on the bottom of the dishwasher! You put them on top!"
"I put 'em on th' bottom fer a reason, ya flyin' monkey! Th' water pressure's better for 'em!"

    Yeah, it was stupid.

"That doesn't even make any sense, you clod! You put the bowls and smaller pots on the top, and you leave the iron skillets for hand-washing!" Boon just huffed, crossing his arms as his tail flicked around irritated. Collins didn't care, though, glaring at that daemon with such a look. "Do it right." Oooh... The idea of throwing that gargoyle into the trash where he belonged was extremely tempting, but... "Fffffffffffffine." Ultimately, Boon succumbed to Collins' will and rearranged the dishes as per ordered. The gargoyle let out a huffy sigh before rubbing his forehead and walking out of the kitchen, finally, and taking note of the two new patrons--the avian doctor, and the furry monstress.

Letting out a grumble, Collins grabbed two glasses of water and walked over to them, setting the glasses on the table. "Afternoon," he greeted, looking at the two. "What can I do for you two?"

As the doctor flipped through the menu, his attention kept coming back to Marissa. Clearly something was bothering her, but he wasn't sure if it would be appropriate to ask or not. Regardless, their waiter was here, so the best time to ask was definitely not now.

"Oh, hello Collins," Shaiamils greeted the gargoyle, putting his menu back where it was. "I think we might be ready to order?.."

He looked to the monstress for confirmation, to which she nodded in response.

"Yeah, we're ready. I'd like the spicy tuna bowl, some ahi tuna sashimi, and the patron's perfect cucumber margarita. Oh! And make those separate tickets, please."

The doctor waited for Collins to leave before he finally asked Marissa:

"Is something wrong? I couldn't help but notice that you looked.. upset when I walked in?" There was a pause. "Oh, I mean, you don't have to tell me if you don't want to. Or maybe I was just imagining things?"

Marissa put her own menu back when it was her turn to order.

"I'll have the bang bang shrimp tacos, some ceviche, and," the monstress was unable to stifle a chuckle, "Collins' margarita. Thank you!"

Once Collins was out of earshot, Shai asked her if maybe something was wrong. The question caught her off-guard, but not necessarily in a bad way. The furry monster supposed that she should consider herself lucky to have an acquaintance so concerned for her well-being.

"Don't worry, it's alright, and you weren't imagining things. It's just this time of year, you know? Mother's Day, Father's Day.. Sometimes I really miss my home, and I really miss my parents. The fact that I'll probably never see them again is still proving to be a difficult thing for me to cope with."

She sighed wistfully, her eyes glossy.

"Thank you, Shai. As hard as it can be, I feel that it helps to vent sometimes. I appreciate that you're so willing to listen."

    Scribble, scribble, scribble...

Jotting down the orders, Collins excused himself and went to put the orders into the kitchen, quickly returning to the bar to begin drink preparations. Unfortunately for them, Collins was never out of ear-shot, and heard everything with ease. If he hadn't, he wouldn't be a very good gargoyle, would he? No, he'd just be some animated masonry that could make good drinks, and while that was all fine and dandy, a gargoyle's true nature was to guard their master's home, or in this case, his fluffy boss-lady's and his own home. But! While their conversation was heard, Collins was not the kind of guy to interrupt or push his own thoughts onto others, unless asked, and all he was focused on was preparing their drinks.

    Ting~!

Fetching the finished appetizers, Collins balanced both dishes on his tail with ease and expertise, while his hands were free to pick up Shai and Marissa's drinks. Time to serve! Good thing they both ordered some relatively fast (and delicious) dishes, otherwise they may be waiting a lot longer for something like a steak. Approaching and calmly standing before their table, the gargoyle placed their respective drinks in front of them; Collins' special for Marissa, and the cucumber (straw included!) for Shaiamils.

Next, his tail was brought forward, the ahi tuna and ceviche placed in the center for both to try and enjoy. Dusting off his hands and placing them behind his back, Collins gave a... surprisingly sympathetic look to the fluffy monster lady before asking them both, "anything else I can get for you? Your lunches should be ready in a few minutes, otherwise." Once they spoke, the gargoyle merely nodded before returning back to his post at the bar, waiting for the bell to ring.

    "Oh."

Shaiamils rubbed behind his head nervously as Marissa explained the cause of her sadness. This was a very delicate situation. What exactly was he supposed to say to her at a time like this? The wrong choice of words could easily make the monstress before him feel worse. Clearly he was going to have to choose his words very carefully. Well, here went nothing.

"You have my condolences. I know just how you're feeling right now," the doctor reassured her. "I miss my family sometimes, too, especially at this time of year. Eventually you just learn to cope, but it's never easy. I remember how hard it was to come to terms with when I first arrived."

Fortunately Marissa seemed to be taking kindly to his support. Thank goodness! Soon enough, their drinks and appetizers arrived. Collins even remembered to give him a straw. How nice!

    "Thank you!"

The feathery alien took one bite of his sashimi and was extremely pleased. The fish was very flavorful and the sesame seeds gave it just the right amount of that extra something.

"How's yours, Marissa?" he asked the furry monster.

"Thanks Collins," Marissa thanked the gargoyle. His expression did not go unnoticed. She idly wondered if maybe he wasn't so out of earshot after all. The monstress didn't care all that much, though. Collins was good company. "I think we're good for now."

The tauric monster picked up a chip and eagerly sampled her ceviche. It was wonderful! There was so much flavor. Marissa didn't know where to start when the doctor asked her how it was.

"I love it!" she replied to Shai. The simple 'I love it' didn't really do it justice, though. "Oooh, and I love what they did with that cucumber garnish. It looks so cool!"

Aw yiss. A small smug look grew on the gargoyle's face, hearing the monstress compliment his craftsmanship. While he and Boon sometimes missed their antics from years ago, robbing people and stealing valuable items and just causing general dismay, Collins did thorougly enjoy creating and mixing drinks or garnishing dishes with those little touches. Kind of silly, going from a highwayman to a bartender and waiter with such pride and ease. Whatever the case, the gargoyle was perfectly content with this work, and found the compliments much more rewarding than he would've assumed at first.

It'd still be a bit until the lunches would be complete, so for now, he'd stay at the bar and listen around for anyone in need of a refill or assistance. Those ears were put to good use that way! And yes, he was still listening to the bird and monstress' conversation. He was always listening to everyone's conversations. He wouldn't be a very good gargoyle if he didn't!

"Mmm!" Marissa's mouth curled into a little smile as she took the first sip of her drink. It was something else, and she meant that in a good way!

As the monstress sat her drink back down on the table, a thought crossed her mind. She was curious, but would it be appropriate for her to ask. The furry monster's tail twitched idly as she mulled over it for a moment. Oh, what the heck?

"Say, Shai?" The doctor looked up from his plate, ready to listen. "If you don't mind me asking, what were your parents like? In advance, I'm sorry if I'm overstepping my boundaries."

"Oh no. You're alright, Marissa," Shaiamils reassured her. She let out a sigh of relief in response. "It might have been hard for me in the beginning, but I'm alright with talking about them now."

The doctor took an experimental sip of his own drink. As usual, the Tavern never failed to disappoint.

"My mother was a pediatric nurse. She loved kids, and she was really good with them. Knew right away after she and my father got married that she wanted to have a child of her own. My father was a combat specialist and officer in the military. He was stern and very firm, but made a point to never raise his voice at me unless it was absolutely necessary." The feathery alien chuckled. "I still can't get over how I ended up becoming a military doctor, a hybrid of my parents' professions. Isn't it funny how things work out sometimes?"

"Wow," Marissa remarked, intently listening to the doctor's words. "Your parents sound like they were pretty okay folks. I would love to be able to meet them, but you know how it is. Laws of the land and all that jazz."

The monstress sighed wistfully, thinking to herself.

"Sooo, while we're on the subject of our parents, would you like to hear about mine?" Shaiamils seemed concerned for her well-being, wondering if she felt alright talking about it yet. "I'll be alright, Shai. I get sad thinking about them, but it helps that you're here with me."

Marissa pulled an old photo out of her wallet and slid it to the feathery alien.

"My parents and I took that picture together right after my college graduation. There's a reason my dad looks like he's crying more than my mom. The job I went into was the one my dad really wanted. Things didn't work out for him at college and he was kicked out of the program. Became a janitor at the company because he figured that it was the next best thing."

She paused, taking another sip of her drink.

"Before I left for college, he was so afraid for me. He was afraid that the same thing might happen to me, but he still supported me anyways."

Shaiamils nodded as he listened to the furry monster's story. He looked down at the photo. Marissa was right. Her father was crying his eyes out. This brought a warm smile to the doctor's face.

"Seems to me like your father was a wonderful man." The doctor's attention drifted to the other figure in the picture that he could only assume was Marissa's mother. "What's the story with your mother, if you don't mind me asking. From this picture, I can can tell that you look a lot like her."

He pointed to the lower half of Marissa's body.

"You clearly got that from your father, though."

"Oh yeah, my mom." Marissa chuckled. "She was a hair and fur stylist, and a feisty one at that. I must have gotten that from her, too. I used to get into a lot of fights as a kid. They would say mean things about my dad."

The monstress tapped her claws on the table.

"One time I slashed a kid so badly with these claws that he needed stitches. My mom hated how the school would always insist that I shouldn't behave that way rather than reprimanding the bullies, and she made this very known to the higher ups."

Her tail started to wag slightly as she looked back on these old memories.

"You know, I pretty much dodged a bullet, and I think I have my mom to thank for that. My birthday is April 2nd. She went into labor on the 1st, about a week early. My dad thought it was a joke at first because of this. She used to tell me that she kept her legs crossed until at least midnight on the second because she refused to let me have April Fools' Day for my birthday. And miraculously, it worked! The hospital had no idea how she gave birth naturally, either. She was fairly small for a monster, and with my body shape, they wanted her to have a C-section. She managed to tough it out, though! Go mom!"
