    An Ounce of Caution

Post by Kaon and Vos on Sun Oct 07, 2018 6:45 pm

Vos gave but a quick glance to Kaon, weary optics tracing the lines of his Amica Endura's facial features.  He knew Kaon wasn't thrilled with having the cloak-in-progress inspected for curses, but Livewire was rational in her assertion that they should have the prizes inspected for curses.  After all, just because the jeweled tear he had was one of Fluffy's--Curi's--tears didn't mean that a malevolent entity such as that grubby creature's master hadn't cursed it somehow.  The same could be said of the nargacuga's fur.

Kaon's pained expression aside, the blind electrocutioner had readily agreed to his Amica Endura's suggestion to have a curse-check performed.  His best friend and platonic soulmate only wanted them to be on the safe side, and Kaon really couldn't really argue with that, really.  Vos had been trying to study up on many things since coming to this world, and curses were just one of those many things.

But that didn't mean they wanted first-hand experience.

The pair bumped fists, their shrinking rings clinking against one another.  Vos would need Kaon to speak, of course.  His difficulties with language notwithstanding, it just felt right for Kaon to lead.  He had trusted in Kaon's attempts at leadership when fighting Ruensmortis and it had kept them alive regardless of the wounds they had suffered to both psyche and frame.

"E femm ghulg."  Vos whispered in Old Cybertronian.

Kaon simply nodded, stroking the fur draping his shoulder quietly, as though deep in thought.

Finally breaking through his reticence, Vos rapped his knuckles on the door lightly.  He would pull out the Crystalline Tear of Loyalty to keep at hand in case it was necessary, not having set it on a necklace yet.  To be honest, he hadn't been sure if he was going to keep the necklace for himself, or maybe even gift it to Knock Out.

    Knock, knock, knock!

"Mm..." Something stirred deep within the unassuming abode on 225 Broadband Boulevard. Something evil, and it was none too happy being pestered at such a late hour in the night and without proper forewarning. Had no one heard of giving a ring before stopping by for a visit? Feh...

A rather unpleasant smell wafted up the Cybertronians' olfactory sensors (assuming, of course, they were outfitted with such doodads), and the air took a rather chilly turn. The temperature plummeted several degrees before a sense of malaise draped upon their robotic shoulders, alarmingly more heavy than the fur tightly clutched within the larger mech's grasp. "Who goesss there?" demanded a voice, raspy and emboldened by the power of the grave. "Are you not aware of how late it isss? Tell me who you are and what you want - quickly! Or I ssshall warp you to the nearessst junkyard without remorssse, where you will be ripped apart and melted into variousss housssehold appliancesss." A shadow - perhaps the hazy outline of a body - wavered about inside the house before fading into the gloom, two pinpricks of light bobbing from window to window.

The malodorous aroma seemingly intensified the longer the mechs loitered on the front porch. An aroma they had intimately come to know.

    Rot.

Kaon felt tension prickle in his frame for a moment and felt his olfactory wrinkling for a moment. The scent was almost deathly, but moreso like Ruensmortis' deathly scent, rather than the rotting frames of the Decepticon Justice Division's victims that smelled of fetid sentio metallico. Kaon had almost wanted to retch but tried to keep himself together. He owed it to Vos to do so. Moreover, he owed it to himself. No matter how much he had gone through, he needed to bury it like a traitor and be done with it.

"I am Kaon, and my comrade here is Vos." Kaon explained, swallowing occasionally to keep his energon where it belonged--not coming right back up after being consumed. "Livewire informed us that you would be able to determine whether our so-called 'prizes' from the hunt of Ruensmortis would be cursed or not? We ourselves are inexperienced in the realm of 'magic'." He was if nothing else, honest, barely able to make out the outline of a body, even with using his voice as a source of echolocation.

Vos himself felt a strong sense of foreboding and dread settle more than on his shoulders, but rather in the pit of his chest. The same kind of foreboding and dread he had felt when Ruensmortis had, in essence, torn Kaon asunder. He gave a succinct nod, lifting the crystalline tear that was no doubt left by Curiosity into view. "Would preferring being safe rather than sorry. Apologies." He tried to stand firm, himself, not trying to give in to the sense of dread he felt.

    Eh...

Somewhere along those lines, the magic word had been uttered and the sickly aura dissipated. The pair would not be maimed beyond recognition - for now. With a nauseating - squelch! - Fear at last materialized before the unsteady mechanical lifeforms, the helmeted ghoul seeeeeping from underneath the front door like a sickly black ooze and reshaping himself in all his decrepit, foul glory. Before them now, this Kaon and Vos, stood a towering cadaver dressed in black, his skin a rotted green and his body crooked and misshapen from the hellish effects of unlife. Atop his head lay an iron great helm, coated in ebony liqueur and strangely covetous of its owner's face; almost as if protecting those from gazing upon it.

Fingers creaked and groaned as the superfiend reached out to his 'visitors'. "It isss not magic," he hissed with disdain, "but psssychic prowessss far beyond your meager capabilitiessss. Bring me your trinketsss ssso that I may ssscour them for any underhanded bane. We ssshall sssee if they are indeed cursssed." And whether or not Fear would inform them so.

It would be comical to see the red one turned into a spotted newt...

Vos himself seemed to give a shiver at the sight. The superfiend himself seemed to be even more intimidating than Tarn, Megatron, and that medic from Delphi combined, at least from his own viewpoint. The iron helm was much like Tarn's own mask and, of course, he had to resist the urge to make the comparison out loud. Kaon himself made a soft vocal click, noticing the change of the aura and wanting to figure out what was happening. This was the trouble with being blind, other than the fact that his chronoception was way off and he might as well believe it was mid-afternoon until something had been said.

Vos would draw closer first, holding up the crystalline tear. "We are having of the gratitude for this." He had not hesitated even a moment upon the order, as sharp and firm as Tarn's own orders would have been. It seemed that even the voice reminded him of their commander, a sentiment that Kaon didn't quite share, as his sensitive hearing could discern the ever strange differences, no matter how small.

Kaon would follow his smaller comrade's motion, easing the cloak of Curiosity's luxurious fur off his shoulders, to the waiting grasp. "I will take your word for that." Of course, there was the irony of folks mentioning sight around him, when he was blind to the sights of the world. They would see. He would merely likely only hear, if that.

Yes, yes. Gratitude and all those fluffy, wonderful terms. Fear accepted the items with little fanfare and first inspected the smaller of the two: Vos' crystalline necklace. He rolled it within his leathery palm, communing with the ethereal powers that be. The immediate response was... not good!

    Love...

    Faith...

Exhaustion and then fear... The ghoul's third eye stumbled upon a tidbit most alluring.

    Whiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrr!

    ”GRWAAAHHH!!”

Mm-MM~! Nothing like the lasting sting of bittersweet betrayal and scent of freshly-spilled blood. Though the two machines before him couldn't feel it, a satisfied ripple echoed across Fear's psychic bond. "Ha ha! Bit off more than your lot could chew, did you?" he seemed to goad. "Yesss, sssuch are the consssequencesss of cleaning up after Nyreena'sss messss. Ssshe isss quite good at that, I asssssure you." Miserable wretch. The superfiend pinched the faceted gem between his needle-like talons and returned it to the smaller Cybertronian. "It isss sssafe. I detect no foul-play, not even a resssidual charm. Jussst an appetizing amount of woe..." What a lovely bunch of murderers these two were~! Next was the larger machine's black-and-silver clump of fur, to which Fear brushed his fingertips across its silky hairs with modest glee.

A name was coming to him... something odd, like a... noun. Curiosity...? Ah, the winged monster that had inconsiderately resurrected on their roof! This belonged to none other than Curiosity, and it seemed the monster had indeed been slain by a certain priss. "Ha ha haaaa! Good ssshow, good bloody ssshow!" The superfiend would've clapped if it wasn't so emotional of him. "You have my thanksss for removing that ignorant pessst."

Much like the crystalline tear, the mech's 'rug' found itself back into his mechanical digits. "Neither of your itemsss are cursssed," Fear rasped, "but you will do well to avoid the goblin'sss massster. Only death awaitsss thossse who disssturb it."

Consider his advice payment for letting him witness a clusterfuck of a fight!

Kaon turned his face low. "We did, indeed. And nearly paid the price for it." His digits flexed instinctively and he sighed with relief. Vos' crystalline tear was just a crystal of deep-seated sadness under everything. Perfect for a mech who was as downcast and sad as the small rifle truly was deep down under his glaring lack of empathy. "Hrmph. So she's much like our Megatron in that regard. Making a mess by raising an army that got too big for his own grasp. Our team was always cleaning up the mess, except one that Megatron chose to keep around..." Always, he had to vaguely jab at Starscream. Why Megatron had kept him around was a great mystery to the Electrocutioner.

Vos gave a relieved vent himself. Now he felt safer about turning this keepsake into something a little more meaningful, something that reflected his own deep-seated sorrow.

"We will indeed. I do not fancy my own life coming to an end so easily. And I can be assured Vos feels the same." After all, it had been Vos who had gotten him back. "You have our apologies for the interruption of your evening. Perhaps I will...need to ask Vos how late it is next time." He seemed to lift his helm to just the angle to see empty sockets. Yes, a glance into the pits of Kaon so to speak.

"Hrmph. So she's much like our Megatron in that regard. Making a mess by raising an army that got too big for his own grasp. Our team was always cleaning up the mess, except one that Megatron chose to keep around..."

    Eh...?

Sensing the mech's words had nothing to do with himself, Fear merely scratched his own undead buttocks like the paragon of social etiquette that he was. The superfiend also couldn't see the mechanical facets of Kaon's face well, for he too was of the visually-impaired sort. Their souls were radiant, however. Radiant and frustratingly alien, but that was good enough for Fear's otherworldly senses. "Yesss, that would be damn decent of you," he rasped evenly. And, frankly, much preferred. This wasn't Miss Cleo's house, and Fear didn't hold seances or own any crystal balls! This was for Livewire and that's where the line of respect lay drawn. "If that isss all, I would very much like to return to my family," the ghoul hissed. "I trussst you know the way out of thisss resssidential area, and - oh, a friendly word of advice..."

A presence overcame both the mechs - a dark, wicked presence - and it entered their throats like a thick, ice-cold miasma. "Stay away from the insssipid likesss of Nyreena if you wisssh to sssee another year," Fear warned. Consider this an omen, and not a very pleasant one. "Calamity followsss in her wake, and she caresss not for whom ssshe harmsss. You will do well to sssteer clear of her foolissshnessss." Satisfied, he rigidly gestured to the street behind their persons. "That isss all. You are disssmisssssed."

Now the question becomes thus, much as it always did: will Kaon and Vos heed the old ghoul's warnings, or will they succumb to Nyreena's absurdity like the fools of old? Only time will tell... And that time had nothing to do with the cozy house on 225 Broadband Boulevard.
