Firm paws trotted their way across the forest floor, dusted with soft snow. After establishing an understanding with Curiosity, Ariana felt that she was beginning to put the strange attack behind her. Questions still lingered in her mind though. She wasn't sure if she'd ever get an answer. The forest, which had long given her a sense of comfort, was still colored by the fight. Making peace with the nargacuga made the werewolf itch for the woods once more. Mysterious voice aside, it had been Curiosity and his lady friend who kept her far away from the forest until now! And let's face it, the heartlands just weren't cutting it anymore. Any rabbits she'd been able to sniff out would smartly scurry into the treeline. So, with a deep breath and hoping dearly that this wouldn't backfire, the young woman left the city and returned to the forest for the first time in months.

Her hunt was delayed as the black wolf's nose twitched eagerly. Bushy tail wagging behind her, Ariana flopped down into a snow bank. Something about returning to the woods after so long and the winter wonderland visuals around her made the werewolf feel like a pup at heart! She rolled about in the snow, paws kicking it up into the air. Eventually, her claws found the dirt beneath the snow and she pushed herself along the icy ground. Thick fur kept the wolf warm even as it began to cake the outermost layer of it. A wolfish grin stretched across her muzzle as excited panting seemed to replace the sound of laughter she'd make were she in human form.

Alright, that was enough playing around! There was lunch to find! Ariana rose up from the snow bank, leaving behind clear evidence of her playful romp through it. Bits of snow continued to cling to her body, but she resisted the urge to shake it off. Using it as camouflage instead, the wolf trotted her way to the base of a barren tree and sniffed deeply. Yes, that was the unmistakable smell of rabbit! It must have passed through here! And Not too long ago at that! Narrowing down which direction the smell went, the wolf carefully crept into the thick woods.

    "Hmph, no good..."

It felt like ages since Pele left the safe confines of Portal City, her winter jacket damp with fresh earth and her cheeks flush from the stubborn cold. Everything felt so new, so foreign. It was as if she had awoken from a long, surreal dream. Had she always been this out of touch with her body? Of the untamed world around her? Frowning, Pele fought valiantly against her current opponent - Mother Nature herself - and was determined to climb up the snowy bank just before the forest creek. A jarful of groggy toads would be her rightful reward if she overcame this challenge. And yet, despite incentivized by the thought of them running amok in her room, her arms clawed uselessly through the frigid slush and her legs sunk like anchors, much to the child's dismay.

This is school's fault, she lamented silently. If Pele had been allowed to hone her warrior's spirit and refine her skills, however nascent they were, the child was positive something so trifling as snow would move effortlessly from her path. Sadly, Mr. Rasa had been adamant that she continue her studies and pursue an honest interest in education - for what little good it provided. The child exhaled, allowing herself to sink a couple inches deeper as she looked up to the cloudless sky in defeat. Well, it beats flipping hamburgers... she thought. A warrior's path didn't call for fast food, though Mr. Rasa would undoubtedly say it'd be a good lesson in humility - similar to this snow bank and her weak, human-shaped jelly bean of a body. She grumbled and gave it a smoldering stink-eye. Stupid snow... If only she were as big and strong like Mr. Rasa, or covered in durable metal like Mr. Rabbit... then she'd be a formidable contender. Of course, nothing would get done if the child wallowed around in her own self-pity, so Pele steeled her gaze and resorted to belly-crawling her way over the bank. It wouldn't be glamorous, but it'd get the job done.

    Crunch... Crunch... Crunch...

A little further and she'd - "...!!" She gasped and felt her blood run icy-cold, eyes drawn to the familiar shape of a paw print. A wolf's paw print, and one that seemed fairly recent. "A-A wolf...? Out here, right now...?" Pele squeaked, sweeping her gaze left and right frantically.

Suddenly, the fire in her belly evaporated into a puff of smoke. If there was a wolf, even a juvenile, the child was in jeopardy. Fangs and claws would make short work of her jacket, let alone the child's tender skin and crunchy bones. What was she to do...?

There was only one course of action: retreat. That's what Mr. Rasa would say, and he'd be absolutely right. Nodding to herself, determination read visibly on the child's face as Pele wriggled backward down the bank inch-by-inch - quietly, for any wrong step would spell certain death. With any luck, perhaps the wolf was either long gone or uninterested in tasting human meat. Then again, Pele had a higher chance of finding a four-leaf clover in the snow during the tail end of January.

    Here's hoping...

Post by Ariana Lee on Fri Feb 08, 2019 8:42 pm

Once Ariana was on the rabbit's scent trail, that was all she wrote! The chase was shortlived. Fangs sank into fur and she gave the rabbit a firm shake until it stopped moving. Try as it might, it just couldn't beat the power and strength of a werewolf. The dark wolf licked her chops clean as her great paws kicked snow over the evidence of her meal. Before she'd been bitten, the young woman didn't think much of the idea of hunting. Running around with guns and shooting innocent animals, it seemed positively barbaric to her. Now she had at least some appreciation for it. There was no feeling that could compare to the self-assurance and confidence of tracking down prey. The brief battle before it eventually gave way beneath her teeth. This was far better than any hamburger, no matter how juicy! Because she had to work for it, fight for it. That somehow gave her meals an extra sort of flavoring that no human herb could ever replace.

With a satisfied grumble, the wolf lifted her nose upwards and inhaled deeply. Her intention had been to make sure there were no other predators around who would sniff out the blood she had spilled. The last thing she needed was a fight, although Ariana was confident she could kick ass if needed... Perhaps she'd even been hoping to find another rabbit! Instead, she found herself absolutely thunderstruck. Yellow eyes widened as she tilted her back and sniffed again. Oh, it was undeniable; there was a young human child here in the woods! A little girl! She paced in the snow, flattening it easily beneath her paws as she pondered what to do.

No child would want to be faced with a wolf, especially since she couldn't smell any other humans around. Just the typical wildlife! Her first instinct told her that she ought to leave the child alone. However... Ariana had to consider why this child was here. Had she gotten lost? There were a few additional smells that drifted with the child's, one of which was definitely the smell of a cat. She had a home of some kind. Had she come exploring and wound up lost? Was she even lost at all? Or, most worrisome of all... Was she a new arrival who unfortunately landed all the way out here?

'Fuck, fuck, fuck...!' The werewolf cursed to herself mentally as she came to a decision. Ariana couldn't just leave this kid be. Not if it meant leaving her to wander the woods and eventually freezing to death! Tracking the scent just as she had with the rabbit, the wolf kept to the woods and let the shadows give her dark fur cover. The snow barely crunched beneath her. Each step was quick and light. Finding the girl proved easy enough, although she had to hand it to the kid for being so quiet. Dressed properly for the weather, perhaps she wasn't a hapless new arrival after all? Although Ariana really had to wonder where the parents were... Or what this kid was doing crawling through snowbanks. The canine kept her distance, watching from a good distance away and hidden behind a thick tree trunk. Perhaps she'd linger...just in case. Crouching low, bright yellow eyes continued to observe.

Okay, okay, okay! Think, Pele, think.

Mr. Rasa's thunderous words echoed in the child's mind; stay downwind of the beast, mask your scent, and make as little noise as possible. The first she could do right now, but the others... Well, Pele will just have to make do. She craned her neck around and tried pinpointing the wind's direction in concordance with the wolf's paw prints, assumptions quickly drawn by the flow of her hair. It was close wherever it was - very close - and somewhere north of the child's position. Hm, right beyond the snowbank and that thicket of spartan trees... She sniffed once and slowly rose to a low, tensed crouch. Okay, so if the wolf was north of her and the wind was currently coming from the southwest... Pele's eyes widened. Then the wolf already knew where the child was...!

Suddenly, things weren't quite as optimistic as she'd hoped. Pele had to act and she had to act fast. She immediately reached for her hunting knife, a blade no longer than 5" in length, and felt for the pepper spray in her left pocket. Neither would do much good against a wolf, but it was better than her pathetic bare hands. Armed with her meager defenses, the child kept her eyes drawn to the trees and slowly began to back away, knife held at the ready.

There was a creek nearby. It wasn't deep or anything impressive, but it'd temporarily scatter her human stink and give Pele time to get downwind and hopefully back home. If she could just reach it before the wolf reached her...

Golden eyes watched the kid carefully. There was some movement, head craning, crouching in the snow. It was clear that this child hadn't come here for snowball fight! How oddly... Smart? Calculated? Not something Ariana would expect from a kiddo! And as if that wasn't enough... The fur along her spine raised as sunlight glinted off of the blade! A knife?! Who gave this kid a knife?! Holy shit! The wolf paced in place anxiously, stamping down the snow.

Well shit. The situation had certainly changed now. Where before she had assumed this kid was defenseless and harmless, now it was clear they weren't. That was a good knife... Ariana wasn't sure if she should be relieved that the kid actually had a little weapon, or even more concerned about some kiddo running around with a knife! Furthermore, what should she do now? The kid had turned antsy, scared enough to bring out a knife, perhaps they knew they weren't alone. Remaining hidden would only make them more scared. Jumping right out would probably create a misunderstanding though! She'd be on the fast track to getting stabbed. Perhaps a third option...?

A huff sounded from the wolf as she abandoned her hiding place. The trees were left behind, the wolf exiting the shade that hide her dark fur. She stood in the snowbanks, as easy to spot as a pimple on a teen's face! She stared forward at the child, still remaining a good distance away. After they held a good bit of eye contact, the wolf's legs folded up beneath her body. Ears pinned back against her head, she put on her best show of submission by laying down on the bank as if she were a dog about to snooze. Her bushy tail wagged against the snow wetly in her best impression of a simple hound. Unless this was a badass little kid, they'd probably stay far away. She could only hope that she was getting across that she didn't intend to hunt this kid. If they had a knife, maybe they'd be fine out here alone?

...Welp, so much for outrunning the wolf.

It simply denied all logic. Every nature book, documentary, and lecture Pele had ever heard or read about wolves was now thrown out the window because there was one right there and it was acting like a golden retriever. The child's head was spinning! "..." Her first instinct was to of course run - to flee as fast as her little legs could carry her and never look back. But her second wanted nothing more than to approach the wolf and stroke its wild fur. A classic example of higher reasoning versus monkey brain. How cool would it be to walk into school one day and brag that you got to pet a wild wolf? Pele may never get another chance and it'd be so awesome! But, on the other token, if she was somehow bit...

Her face scrunched and her grip on the hunting knife faltered. Well, it was like they said in history: 'fortune favors the bold', if the Latins were to be believed, and Pele was nothing if not plucky. She reluctantly lowered her defensive stance and stared right into the wolf's golden eyes, perhaps in a display of dominance or because the child was too afraid to take her gaze off the creature. Either way, Pele rubbed the white crowns of her knuckles and took the first step forward, heart racing and blood pounding in her ears.

    Crunch!

She was gonna pet this wolf and live to tell the tale! And she was so gonna be in trouble with Mr. Rasa.

Where before, this odd child looked ready to throw down, it was clear that Ariana's dog act had done the trick! Who could resist a happy-looking canine? That bushy tail continued to wag and thump against the snow as she held the kid's gaze. Their defensive stature dropped despite the lingering eye contact, and they were beginning to approach. Seeing that knife still out and about made her anxious but...! The wolf swallowed her anxiety and instead rested her chin upon her own paws. Her ears were still pinned back flat against her skull. Not a single hint of fangs were showing. And there was one last step to keep this little act going...!

"Arroo arooo arroooo...!" Whines vibrated their way out of her chest, echoing across the land around them. Ariana's paws shuffled in place, crawling forward by an inch as if attempting to close the distance. She was doing everything she could to come off as the least aggressive, and totally not eager to attack wolf that had ever galloped through this forest! "Aarroooo!" She had no idea what would happen from here. Maybe the kid wasn't really a kid, and they'd take the opportunity to stab her in the back! Maybe Ariana would earn the child's trust and she could lead the way out of the woods. Or perhaps they'd just part ways, though she was hoping more for that second option.

Continuing to crawl forward and leaving a little trail of disturbed snow in her wake, there was still some considerable distance between them. Alright Ariana. Time to go for the ultimate show of submission! The wolf plopped onto her side, yellow eyes still on the child. Her feet kicked out helpfully, assisting her roll onto her back and exposing a very fuzzy tummy! So plush, so soft! Don't you wanna give it a pat?

    "Arroo arooo arroooo...!"

Was this a fierce wolf or was this a cuddly pooch...? Whatever the answer, the instinctive urge to giggle and nuzzle against plush, inviting fur took Pele by storm. Innocent laughter escaped the child as the wolf rolled onto its fuzzy belly, her eyes delighted by the animal's playful charms and her cheeks as rosy as the dawn-lit sky. This was so against everything in all the nature books and documentaries (and this was clearly no normal wolf), but whereas alarm bells should be sounding off in one's head, Pele heard no such thing. She instead approached the creature, frightful gaze replaced by a smile, and knelt beside it without a care in all the world. Gentle hands roamed up and down the wolf's coat, fingers sinking into the sable sea. Her dagger, meanwhile, lay harmlessly on the snow below. "Aw, you're just so cute~!" Pele giggled. "And so soft, too! You're very sweet for a wolf. Do you belong to someone?"

It was foolish. Very, very foolish to trust a wild animal, let alone a wolf, but then would a wolf act like such a puppy...? Perhaps this wasn't a wolf at all. Perhaps this was a supernatural creature, like a witch's familiar or a devil-dog, or maybe even an alien! But, didn't most aliens look like Mr. Rasa...?

She scrunched her nose and kept stroking the wolf's exposed tums. Maybe the answer will reveal itself later, or maybe the answer will appear in the form of monstrous eldritch teeth snapping around Pele's head. Either way, the child was going to pet this wolf for as long as she could and she was going to like it, because death be damned. Hands felt around the animal's neck for any signs of a collar, scritching and scratching the wolf's chinny-chin-chin. "Do you have a name?" Pele asked, rubbing its cheeks. "Hm, do you, Mr. or Mrs. Wolf?"

Was 'Woof' too on the nose...?

Aaw... Very few things could compare to such soft laughter. It was enough to elicit a doggish smile on Ariana's snout. Her tongue lolled out of the side of her mouth, pulsing with each pant. Just as she anticipated, showing her tummy and acting like a dog had done the trick! Only a soulless little kid could resist such temptation. This rosey-cheeked little cutie was practically eating her act up as small child fingers roamed through the wolf's dense coat. Pele would find that she carried the smell of the outdoors. There was the briefest hint of a fresh kill on her breath though, lingering remains of her rabbit treat.

"And so soft, too! You're very sweet for a wolf. Do you belong to someone?"

Pfft! Well, Ariana was asking for that one. Wolves didn't exactly act like puppies and even this little girl wasn't stupid enough to think she just happened to find a friendly wolf! Still, the ebony wolf shook her head from side to side. Hopefully the girl would notice and realize that she understood every word she was saying. Man, if only she could communicate just how much those scratches hit the spot... Paws wriggled, kicking in place lightly! Ariana kept her legs reigned in so as to not accidentally strike the child. Her tail went fwump fwump fwump against the thick snowbank. More please, oh yes! Yellow eyes turned on the charm, a begging puppy dog look coming over her face as both ears pressed firmly against her own skulls. More pets, more rubs! Claws were great but not flexible enough to get those itchy spots.

When the child's hands moved up to her neck, the wolf stiffened up for a moment. Was this a surprise attack? An attempt to throttle her?! ...Oooh, wait wait! The chin! The chin~! Ariana's thick head leaned against the girl's fingers, pressing and nestling against her nails. Oh! So nice! In all the right spots, ooh~! She let out a small whine, tail getting faster as she wriggled against the girl's affectionate hands. If only there was a way to give a 'yes or no' answer when it came to names...! Pressing her face further into the child's hands, her intelligent eyes stared deeply into Pele's. "Aaaaoooohhh!" She whined, nodding further into her palms, tongue flecking out to give her hands a friendly lick.

D-Did... Did the wolf just shake its head? Either this was one smart fluffer or something otherworldly really was going on! Pele's nose couldn't scrunch any further, but the child didn't quit scratching that dense belly of wild fur, her petite hands running up and down the wolf's neck. A dangerous risk, though calculated. Pele squealed and shrieked with excitable laughter as the sensation of something wet and warm drenched her fingers in saliva. "Ew, no~!" she giggled, wiping both hands on her pants. "No offense, Mrs. Wolf, but your breath smells like rabbit!" There was no mistaking that pungent aroma of a fresh kill - of fresh blood. Pele sniffed and wiped her nose clean off the sleeve of her puffy jacket. "Well..." the child mused, her eyes looking to the far horizon, towards the city, "I should probably getting heading back... Mr. Rasa will wanna know where I am, and he won't be thrilled to know that I made friends with yet another wild animal."

She then gasped and looked down at the wolf pleadingly with those great big blue, innocent eyes. "But you're not a just another wild animal, are you, Mrs. Wolf!? You're so much more amazing than that!" Pele unzipped one of her coat's many pockets and reached inside, fingers fumbling around. Brr, it was cold! "Mr. Rasa won't understand, but I know a bunch of schlubs at the schoolyard who will!"

It wasn't a knife this time, don't worry, Mrs. Wolf! Though it was quite eye-catching...

"Here!" Pele withdrew her cellphone, the poor thing bejeweled and covered in glittery stickers from here to the moon, and knelt down beside her newfound friend with an eager smile. "Mind if we take a picture together, Mrs. Wolf? I want to brag to all my friends that I met a 'wild' wolf! They don't gotta know that you're probably a shapeshifter or alien in disguise." Wink wink, nudge nudge. Don't worry, Mrs. Wolf - your secret was safe with Pele! She breathed on its screen with a foggy breath and wiped it clean for good measure. "Boy, won't Timothy be gobsmacked when a lil' girl can dance with wolves and he can't." Spoiler alert: Timothy Dubois was a snot-nosed instigator at recess, and needed to be kicked down a peg.

...Or, you know, ten. Go big or go home!

Mrs. Wolf! Now that was one she'd never heard before! Ariana snorted softly, grinning up at the girl without any sign of being insulted by the comment about her breath. One had to wonder how the kid knew the smell of a freshly killed rabbit though! Perhaps she truly spent her time in the forest often? She certainly had a lot of spunk and bravery to cuddle with a wolf! If only this form possessed the ability to speak, she would have so many questions for this little girl. At least the mention of a 'Mr. Rasa' meant that there was an adult looking out for this kid! Making a mental note to keep an ear out for that name, Ariana's tail wagged even more as she nudged her furry dome affectionately against Pele's hands. No offense taken, if it was time to go it was time to go! And hopefully Pele's future animal friends would remain tame ones...

"But you're not a just another wild animal, are you, Mrs. Wolf!? You're so much more amazing than that!"

Smart kid! Not that it was exactly hard to guess in a world like Portal Breach, but Ariana was still impressed. And flattered too! Ears pinning back against her skull, the wolf's gaze dropped to the snow bank as she let out an affectionate rumble. Now what was this about some schlubs? Pele withdrew an adorable little cellphone, reassuring Ariana all the more that, were she lost, Pele would have had a way to communicate and get help. What lovely stickers! So glittery, like something from her own childhood. Her moist nose pressed forward, sniffing it curiously.

Oh, she wanted a selfie, did she? ...That was what kids called it right? When they took a picture with someone? The idea was rather funny! This little girl found a wolf. Ready as she was to defend herself, all it took was being a friendly puppo for Pele to cuddle her and want to take a little picture together! It was rather charming. Well, brag away Pele! And perhaps Ariana could find her in the city later for a copy of the picture for herself! With a toothy grin, her snout nudged at the phone as a gesture to give her consent. Let's make Timothy jealous and show him you can dance with the best of wolves! Ears perked, Ariana leaned her firm body against Pele like a cuddly husky. The tip of her tongue poked out between her black fuzzy lips, and Ariana was ready for their selfie!

    Cute!

    This wolf was CUTE!

The very moment - the very moment - Pele felt thick fur brush against her skin, the child immediately burst with a delighted squeal and snuggled her fluffy companion hard. "You're the best wolf ever~!" she giggled. It was a shame she couldn't take her home... Mr. Rasa may be many things, but a tamer of wolves wasn't one of them! Or a lover of dangerous predators... With a wink and a click, the selfie was a wrap and Pele had her magnum opus, the grin plastered on her rosy face as wide and deep as the Grand Canyon. Did Portal Breach have one of those? "Aw, you're blepping!" If that didn't earn an affectionate kiss on the wolf's muzzle, Pele didn't know what did. The child laughed, tickled by Mrs. Wolf's whiskers, and showed her new friend their picture in earnest. "I think this is a keeper, what do you think?" she asked. How could it not be? There was a happy child, her cheeks full and colored by the cold of winter, and at her side was a fluffy wolf sticking out her tongue and being a thousand times adorable! No filter was ever going to sully this one.

Alas, the afternoon was growing old, and soon it'd be time for Pele to make the long journey home before Mr. Rasa came searching for the adventurous child himself. A forlorn sigh escaped her chapped lips. "I don't want to leave you, Mrs. Wolf, but my guardian will have stern words if I don't return home for dinner..." she fessed. And then there will be trouble. "But, before I do, I wanna give you this!" It wasn't much, but to Pele it was everything. She pulled back the sleeve covering her left arm and removed a bracelet, its many stones glinting softly in the sun. "Here, for taking a picture with me and not eating my face!" Pele laughed, weaving it around the wolf's right paw.

"I make these!" the child explained, looking proud. "Sometimes, if I do well in school, Mr. Rasa takes me to the local craft store and lets me choose all the beads. These are blue onyx!" Well, faux blue onyx, but they were close enough to the real deal for a fourth-grader! The leather was genuine, at least.

Pele tapped her chin and regarded her new friend with an inquisitive tilt of her head. "Maybe now, we'll be able recognize each other again?"

    "You're the best wolf ever~!"

    GASP!

You hear that, random Kindle Forest wolves?! Ariana was the best wolf, not you! Perhaps it was childish to get so excited, but Pele's glee was just so contagious! She snuggled back as best as she could, pressing her firm wolf body against the girl and nuzzling her snout against her face affectionately. The grin on Pele's face made the selfie all the more worth it! How lucky that werewolves weren't like vampires in that regard, huh? Or else the poor kid would have a ruined selfie! Blepping was about the best expression a canine could make for a picture, and she figured it'd be best for this little picture! "Rrrr~!" The wolf rumbled in response to the little kiss on her snoot. How cute this kiddo was...! Whoever her parents were, they had certainly raised her right! "Arrrooo, arroooo!" The wolf almost howled her agreement! It was definitely the best selfie she'd had in a long time! With a wolfish grin, she paid at Pele affectionately and pressed the mass of her furry neck into the girl's face in another show of affection and approval.

"I don't want to leave you, Mrs. Wolf, but my guardian will have stern words if I don't return home for dinner... But, before I do, I wanna give you this!"

Oh yes. If Pele wanted to make it home before dark, she would need to leave soon. No matter how cool and independent she was, the little girl was still plagued by her tiny legs! A shame that their cuddling was at an end, but oh? Triangular ears perking, the wolf tilted her head to the side curiously. Dark moist nose twitching, she watched as the child removed a bracelet from her own arm and secured it to Ariana's own! She kept her paw still as Pele weaved it around her foreleg. Ariana rarely wore anything in her wolf form, but she could make an exception for this! Once it was secure, she lifted her paw up and pressed her nose against the gift to sniff it. The beads were all such lovely shades of blue, and the leather smelled like the real deal! As a thanks, the wolf almost knocked the child down as she began to lick her face all over like an excited doggo! "Rrr, rrr~!" And to think, Pele made it all by herself! What a clever little child! Ariana didn't know a lot about jewelry, let alone what blue onyx meant stone-wise, but she did know the gift was pretty and valuable. Not because of the monetary value, but because it was made from the heart of this sweet kiddo!

"Maybe now, we'll be able recognize each other again?"

Rather than seem afraid by the idea, the ebony wolf pulled back and shot the girl a wolfish grin. She nodded her head in agreement, pawing at her gently with her right paw. Indeed, she would keep this on her person so that they could recognize each other in the everyday life of Portal Breach! Despite how young Pele was, Ariana truly felt that she could trust the little girl completely. Sensing that their time was at an end, the wolf weaved its way around Pele affectionately, leaning her body against the child and pressing her furry dome against the kid's hands. You give those kids what for with that selfie, Pele! Make them recognize just how daring and cool you were!
